Electric cars have to make a noise by law now, since 2019 I think it is. Below about 15mph they all have various versions of spaceship whirr don't they? It's completely artificial, done with speakers. Above 15mph the tyres become the loudest thing anyway.

Having walked around central London a fair bit I'm not convinced by any "loud pipes save lives" argument, despite this ^^^^. In London there is so much noise going on that you don't notice the one loud engine among the 57 others you can hear, or if you do you wouldn't clock immediately which way it's coming from. Same with loud vehicles in traffic, you never hear them until after they've gone past, by which point it's moot.

The fake noise thing exists for car parks, residential streets and places like that. Once a vehicle is above a brisk walk other bits of it are noisier anyway.

I ride in London most weekdays and have done for 30 years. Having an audible warning such as a louder bike 100% helps with myopic peds and cyclists. I had a bout zero near misses when I had my Harley! It stands to reason with sound being omnidirectional. Anyway, I still want a ebike such as a zero but its enough of an issue to make me think about it. The price of a fully loaded one kills it dead though!

Do they though? Last time I rode my GS (Full Remus, no cat, no baffle) people still dandered on out. Noise cancelling headphones have a lot to do with it.

People have been managing to get run over for a long time now, whereas silent (powered) vehicles are a pretty new thing in the main.

No-one has invented an invisible vehicle yet AFAIK, yet people still get run over. People don't even hear police sirens.

Just maybe, the audibility (and indeed not-invisible-ness) of a vehicle isn't that important compared to other things?

Kind of. Yes, deffo some people hear loud bikes over quiet bikes, which stands to reason, but of course many dont hear bikes , lorries, cabs etc.

I was very pro eBikes, and looking forward to getting one at some point, but much less so now. I think the bigger zeros would easily have enough range for my commute, so that side of things is sorted. But, with so many near misses with London's cyclists and pedestrians, its the quietness of them, of all things, thats putting me off!

Mate drives a Scania S620 which is IIRC something like a 16 litre V8 on side pipes, it's fucking loud when you boot it, he also has the thing lit up like Blackpool sea front, I was out for a run with him lifting a digger when we got caught in traffic and he ran out of driving time, I had my card on me so I took over, coming through Cookstown, I gave the thing some pedal to get up the hill and someone looked directly at the big fuck off noisy truck with about 20 LEDs on it and walked straight out in front of us.

People are just mad sometimes.

Lightning have obviously engineered a reason for you to stop for 10 minutes or more when you have to recharge.

Not me, always had bikes for long distance work that didn't need me to take a break every few hours. Its the reason I bought the bike suitable for this purpose. As do most others.

I did Stranraer to Wisbech a few times with only a top up at Todhills at the top of the M6, Pan Euro is just like a 90mph armchair.

Did my intial police advanced course final ride on a Pan. Had a choice of bikes, but chose the Pan above everything else they had available for me to ride. Never regretted that choice.
