This has caused me some thought when I've considered getting an EV with home charging. Ideally a charging socket at the back left is ideal but if it isn't there then do I need a stupid long heavy trip hazard of a cable or do I get creative with my parking, should I get extra charging points fitted so I can always park neatly and not cause people to fall over?

I can't remember if I've commented on this previously, but I've had a Zero SR/F for about six months now, and it's spaztronically good. In my forty years of riding it's the best and easiest bike I've ever ridden. Fast as fuck, 140ft/lbs of torque all available from the tiniest twitch of the throttle, the acceleration is relentless and almost unreal with no gear changes. My darling wife has na early new BMW S1000XR, R1250RS or KTM640 to choose from, and she nearly always nicks my Zero (if I'm not out on it,) it's that good, especially when doing IAM masters tests. She can hear what gear they're in so can tell whether they're doing IPSGA properly And you can fill up for free at Asda

How you finding the range/charge time balance?

Average range on a mix of roads is between 120-140 miles. Less on motorways (no regeneration) more on back roads or in town/traffic.
On a fast charger it'll go from empty to full in about 90 minutes, a normal one about 2.5 hours, three pin plug about 4-5 hours.
It would make a great commuter (work? fuck that!) and you could quite easily tour on it with a bit of planning and about 300 miles a day. For me it's basically a toy though, 80 odd miles out on a sunny Sunday, recharge for a bit and have lunch then back again being typical.

It takes longest to charge (for free) at Asda though, because you can't get away, people queue up to talk to you about it!

Yes and no. It's physically tiny but weighs a bit over 200kg. However the weight is all so low down it feels like it weighs much less very, easy to manoeuvre, especially at low speed. 0-60 is a shade under 3 seconds (or 1.6 seconds on a Dyno )

I was persuaded to go for a test ride on an open day sort of thing, I had my Ducati head firmly on, muttering "I'll hate this" I came back grinning and within a week had traded in my Diavel

As I've just seen on their site. Is there any financial upside, notwithstanding the need for prehistoric plant matter to be purchased? Road tax? What about servicing?

No road tax on EVs at present, but I doubt that's gonna last much longer (relatively).

My parents just bought a new EV Mini and took up the BMW dealer service plan. Fleeced if you ask me, there isn't any servicing on the powertrain of pretty much every EV! Brakes and tyres obviously yes, but powertrains are generally sealed for life.

If you're clever with your tariff you can run 'em for pennies. In fact, they have solar and batteries at home, they charge up the house and car at 9p overnight and then feed into the grid at 15p from the panels during the day
