Looks like retaliatory action to me. KTM have been muscling in on Ducati's territory for many years, so I guess Ducati figured they could do worse than attack KTM's heartland.
There is no cloud, just somebody else's computer.

Plus it's a massive market I can't remember the exact numbers and I know KTM sell small road bikes too, but KTM sell about 4 times as many bikes as Ducati and off road bikes have to be the bulk of that

MX is big money these days, especially in the States...

Ducati's Desmodromic valve gear lends itself well to high revving, high specific horsepower output applications with relatively short service interval requirements... Modern MX bike engines are arguably overbuilt for the application, especially when you consider just how much more maintenance was required in the 2 stroke halcyon days.

Looking at the specs for the 659cc single they're going to be putting in the new Hypermotard, I for one will be gagging for a test ride! It's basically half of a 1299 Panigale engine!!!

It will be interesting to see what they do, but Ducati being Ducati, they won't enter the fray without already having a significant advantage in some way shape or form (most likely power output)... Be interesting to see what they're going to target, cos the desmodromic valves would arguably make more of a difference on a 250 than they would a 450... Which could be interesting, as Triumph have targetted the 250 class rather than the 450 class for the moment too!
