When talking to my brother about his issues with healthcare in the UK etc, I'd say healthcare plus top up insurance here is incredibly cheap for an amazing service!

He pays private insurance that's well over £100 a month. And still struggles to get the sort of care that I do here :(

I do know that some expat friends out here resent having to pay the insurance, but without it, I'd have probably had to sell my apartment to pay for the rehab!!

Because we're not working and paying into the system, we must have private health insurance. It's about 1500€ a year, but we go for the top level of cover.
It's very good and covers everything.

Does that cover you both? If so, it's not that bad considering it is fully private. Because I do pay into the system, I just need the top up version

It's each. But can reduce the level of cover when I hit state pension age. I'll get full state Spanish NHS but keep some private cover to top up.

Wifey has taken a small job, teaching English a couple of evenings a week at the language school we go to for Spanish. It's a proper job with a contract and obvs the social security number, wifey now has her SIP card. Because she has one the I can get one, both on the Spanish NHS age 60. 🙂

Photo of the origin of the Luton fire show a LR Evoque with the fire starting under the left side... where the li-Ion batteries are.

So one Hybrid EV took out 1200 other vehicles.

I wouldn't know one way or the other what caused the fire (in the same way that nobody here does), and something electric-related seems like a viable contender.... But... what you say is disingenuous. The battery is under the rear seat (both sides), and the fire appeared to start from the front left.

So, while it may well still be the cause somehow, your smoking gun doesn't seem very accurate.

Bah, if you ask me all them other cars shouldn't be filled up with highly inflammable liquids! Asking for trouble.

Never seen a mass bike rack fire, just saying.

There have been a number of high-profile car park fires over the years, and the Liverpool Echo Arena fire is perhaps the most significant of them all. On New Year’s Eve in 2017, a 16-year-old car went up in flames, starting a blaze that spread quickly through the MSCP. 1,200 vehicles were destroyed, costing insurers an estimated £20million.

That isn't a hybrid though, that's just a mild hybrid. The hybrid is below. We're maybe just getting into semantics now, but if you're counting mild hybrids as 'EV's' because they have a battery, then you ought to count all cars as they also have batteries.

Not to mention all the non-hybrid cars and bikes which have 12V lithium ion batteries. And caravans, although I'll grant you there aren't many of those in multi level car parks.

Yeah, that's what I meant, though not written well :)

Either way, if the fire brigade were correct in saying it was a diesel, then it can't be even a mild hybrid Evoque as there wasn't one in that bodyshape.

It could be a RR Sport mind you :)

And we all happily walk around with Lion battery phones in our pockets.

Some people have one sewn into their chest

The main point to consider IMO is not that Lithium batteries don't catch fire. It's more than petrol and diesel really really catch fire! They take far less provocation to catch fire too and once they're going the really fucking go. Which is why we run engines on them after all.

If you tried to introduce petrol cars now you'd get nowhere 'cause it's far too sketchy. But familiarity, contempt etc. "We" have managed to make petrol cars safe enough / familiar enough that we don't worry about the enormous fire risk they pose.

So pointing out that Lithium Ion batteries can catch fire isn't really a killer argument IMO.
