That's not too much info. I like reading stuff by ex pats, it gives me a comparison to living costs etc for the UK.

When talking to my brother about his issues with healthcare in the UK etc, I'd say healthcare plus top up insurance here is incredibly cheap for an amazing service!

He pays private insurance that's well over £100 a month. And still struggles to get the sort of care that I do here


I do know that some expat friends out here resent having to pay the insurance, but without it, I'd have probably had to sell my apartment to pay for the rehab!!

Wifey has taken a small job, teaching English a couple of evenings a week at the language school we go to for Spanish. It's a proper job with a contract and obvs the social security number, wifey now has her SIP card. Because she has one the I can get one, both on the Spanish NHS age 60.

I wouldn't know one way or the other what caused the fire (in the same way that nobody here does), and something electric-related seems like a viable contender.... But... what you say is disingenuous. The battery is under the rear seat (both sides), and the fire appeared to start from the front left.

So, while it may well still be the cause somehow, your smoking gun doesn't seem very accurate.

That isn't a hybrid though, that's just a mild hybrid. The hybrid is below. We're maybe just getting into semantics now, but if you're counting mild hybrids as 'EV's' because they have a battery, then you ought to count all cars as they also have batteries.

Either way, if the fire brigade were correct in saying it was a diesel, then it can't be even a mild hybrid Evoque as there wasn't one in that bodyshape.

The main point to consider IMO is not that Lithium batteries don't catch fire. It's more than petrol and diesel really really catch fire! They take far less provocation to catch fire too and once they're going the really fucking go. Which is why we run engines on them after all.

If you tried to introduce petrol cars now you'd get nowhere 'cause it's far too sketchy. But familiarity, contempt etc. "We" have managed to make petrol cars safe enough / familiar enough that we don't worry about the enormous fire risk they pose.

So pointing out that Lithium Ion batteries can catch fire isn't really a killer argument IMO.
