Exhaust stud removal - BMW R1150GSA

A fellow user of a cycling forum said I should come here to ask this question. They go by the name of Katana here.
My first post is a question so here we go. In August I purchased an old shed of a Beemer, which if you squint quite hard could look presentable but it is 20 years old and anything that could deteriorate has done it in style. Due to trying to rush things when fitting a new rear shockI thought taking the whole exhaust off would be a good thing. It wasn't and I didn't need to do it but now three of the four manifold studs have snapped off level with the colars on the pipes. There will be some protruding from the heads.

So the actual question is where can I take it (it's blowing a little bit but still rideable) that will remove the remains of the studs?

I have never welded and do not know anyone with a welder and due to work commitments I need someone else to do it. I tried a chap who would have been perfect - Thread Doctor but he has retired to the New Forest.

That's good, thanks weeksy. However I don't have access to a trailer and I'd be reluctant to ride too far in its current condition. It's certainly an avenue to persue if there is nothing more local. There is a company in the next town over, Wokingham, called Big CC Racing. It's a company I've known of for many years but never used. I went there on Saturday, when I had been told to return to see the manager and no bugger was there. I'm now on 6 x nights so may be able to visit them one afternoon this week.

I'd be amazed if they can't sort it, they're a proper machine shop if i recall.

I got these out with a blow torch, a stud removal tool and lots of PlusGas. Just take your time and soak them heavily. Then apply heat. Give them a smart tap with a 2pound hammer and wind them out. Mine were 20 odd years old as well and the original set.

By the sounds of it, you've got some material to work with, which will help a lot. I've got a broken stud on the Rockster, I'm pretty sure it's broken off flush with the head, but I gave up trying the others after that one broke and have just been riding the bike as is with no problems.

Huzzah! I seem to have found someone who will do it. I can't get it to them before the 24th but that's okay. Bigg CC Racing were too busy, which I understand but said GS Motorcycles just a stone's throw from them might and they will. I will report back once done. I'm going to ask them to helicoil one rocker cover bolt too.

Helicoils in the rocker covers are a good idea - those holes are way too soft for the large screws BMW fitted (I understand their reasons for doing so).

Just don't try to do that one up harder than the rest.. if you forget which one it is then you'll end up needing to do them all. Two fingers about an inch from the screw is all the torque I put on those buggers.
