May backfire on whoever was being it. 🤷‍♂️

Trees don't matter anymore, fast trains matter. 👍
Who's stolen it, the tree was still there, who did the tree belong to, whose land was it on, why is it a tourist attraction, if it's a tourist attraction would the land owner be entitled to charge for access to the tree, couldn't people visit a more interesting tree?
As the tree was on National Trust land, my guess is that they are the owners? Wouldn't you say that things that grow on your land are owned by you? Or would you be happy for people to come to your property and chop any plants or trees down? Or even damage your property?

The National Trust are a charity, they potentially could charge for access, but they ask for donations or subscriptions instead as they would like everyone to be able to enjoy the area, not just entitled little shits with a chainsaw.
I didn't know who owned the land or tree, now I do, now I'm happy it's been cut down as I don't like the National Trust
I love how you know it was "an entitled little shit" that chopped the tree down, I don't know who it was, but it's a lovely neat cut, someone knew what they were doing.

It's because they are constantly told that they're owed something from society, and they actually believe it. So because they haven't got it yet they think it means that they've been cheated and that they can behave however badly they want to.
I certainly thing a lot of people demand rights before they even think about responsibility.
In the old(er) days it was slightly different- most of us had to graft or do as we were told and we'd probably get what we wanted.

My SIL is a good example. A real salt-of-the-earth streetwise goon. Knows how to play the social security system, never had a proper job, but zillions of part time stuff nearly always cash-in-hand. But always moaning what a hard time she has and fibbing that "she's worked all her life". Not true, played the system.

I've been trying to remember why this story triggered a sort of memory in me.

I figured it out. Simpsons did it!

Ooh...do go on, I'll bite.

Is it because they're anti-hunt, getting a bit 'woke', popular with old people? Or is it because they're a prop for an out-of-date social hierarchy where what once were the very, very rich need a bit of help maintaining their ancestral piles and the vast lands around them?

No, the National Trust want to preserve things from the past, I don't, I want to see things from the past used and turned into things that we want today. People should be able to visit ruined castles and explore them, not look at them from behind a rope.

Part of that preserving them is to stop visitors getting brained by falling chunks of masonry.

Had EH membership for a while when i had the van.
Accidently put the sticker in the windscreen upside down, so whenever anyone pointed out the sticker was wrong I made hush-hush motions and claimed we were the Provisional Wing.

This whole thing leaves me baffled. Why? It was cut down by pros, so those who know about tree felling say. But why would a tree surgeon/lumberjack cut down this tree? It makes no sense, or so i first thought, but, then I discovered this,

"Ethnobotanic: Native Americans used sycamore for a variety of medicinal purposes, including cold and cough remedies, as well as dietary, dermatological, gynecological, respiratory, and gastrointestinal aids."

Susssed it. Big Pharma is behind it. :angry-cussingblack: You mark my words...

Well as above, Reddit speculated about it and now a 60 year old man has been arrested/questioned.

So it's a hit job done by an enterprising 16 year old. We should be applauding him for his endeavour really, making his own money

Maybe, but not necessarily, lots of kids go to work with their parents/older siblings.
Id driven a small loco (and de-railed it then got it lifted back on its tracks by my older brother using a digger) before I was eight. Drove a quarry loader before I was 13 and loads of farm kids do all sorts of jobs that others might not expect.
Few of my mates as a kid had used chainsaws, felled trees.

I'm not excusing this all by the way, Ive walked past the tree, remarked about it being between Dover and Nottingham on the Robin Hood film.
It looked quite nice and I couldn't see a reason to cut it down but I can understand locals being pissed off with tourists parking in gormless places all the bloody time and blocking access or wide vehicles.
Thats a possible reason but I'm no way sure about that.

I could blame various of societies defects in an effort to sound important/bright/just bang the drum for whatever my existing biases are. That would just be silly though eh?

Well we can say one thing about this society.

Its developed and industrialised enough that a random scrote can gain access to a chainsaw, access to transport, access to artifical lighting and access to training/support in using all those quite advanced things.

This can only be a good thing.

IIRC there were Italian tourists visiting there about 2000 years ago ;)
