Yup and flags and all sort of other stuff are full of them, they are there for a reason, to be there for over 300 years, and the people who chopped down a tree knowing, and they did, otherwise why do in the dead of night, and for what reason, firewood? Nope, they know what that tree means to people thats why they cut it down. Having no respect for, in many people eyes an iconic tree, that is why they are icons. I will therefore assume that in your life, and yes I'm still stoned but I make no excuse for saying. that if in your life there is nothing, and I mean just one thing that you know that is, and has been for 300 years something iconic, unique, the only one, like this ever in existence has one like this and you are willing to 'destroy' that object so no one else, despite it being a 'just' a tree makes me sad. Being able to say that as if its nothing, I would think is unusual. It maybe a tree to you but to many millions of people. Ask artists that have painted it, lovers that would have made love for centuries under the tree, people who have proposed, got engaged or even kissed under that tree. Never mind the many thousands of people who come to photograph it, What you are saying is that is ok to destroy that sort of thing. Otherwise that iconic unique thing that you can think of, anything in history, object, flag, it means absolutely nothing. Might as wipe it all out history that is nothing to see here lets smash it all up, cos no-none bothered about it.

300 years old is feck all for a tree, I've seen 2000 year old trees.

And it's still a tree, a source of wood.

I blame the visitors, if it wasn't for them the tree would have lasted a couple more years before it was felled because it was damaging the wall.

It's an invasive tree, no loss.

Is cutting down a tree a worse crime than someone hitting your wife/mum/child?

Answer honestly

I wouldn't want anyone hitting my wife.

Those are my calories to burn.

Sycamore is not a native tree, it's fast growing and out competes native species, it's the grey squirrel of trees. Pull the stump and plant something decent in it's place.

To me,this is just symptomatic of the state that the UK has dragged itself into.

The NHS is broke - I don't have the time to list all the faults and the ones I miss would be longer than the ones I mention. Crime is endemic and the Criminal Justice system is a mess and not fit for purpose, just a Criminal system these days. The police are now a political tool and are more intent on policing offensive speech (often the truth) and ignoring burglaries and other crimes. The Metropolitan Police is a fucking shambles, full of rapists, murderers and hate speech specialists. The Education system would appear to be following Robespierre's advice and is crumbling like the schools where children go to be indoctrinated.

The transport system is a complete joke, requiring new meanings to be used for words like late, punctual and service. Politics is a joke and the UK has the worst bunch of politicians in living memory. The stupid have elected self serving arseholes to rule rather than to serve and govern. Not one has the future of the country as their top priority. Pensioners are paid a pittance so that illegal immigrants can be 'looked after' better. Come to the UK legally and it's going to cost you a fortune in different visas and you won't be able to work legally for 3 years. The government department that is supposed to deal with immigration issues is not fit for purpose. That great institution, the RNLI is actively involved these days in people trafficking, prompted to do so by the UK Border Force which is another government department not fit for purpose.

Yes, yes, it's just another tree, an invasive species, a weed. But the police got there quick enough and they're not going to bother turning up when your house gets burgled. Their priorities are clear.

The UK, like a lot of its institutions is broken. It used to be that it was a good place to live but from where I sit and observe, it's rapidly becoming a Third World Country. Not even black lives matter now it would seem if Elianne Andam's fate is any sort of marker. I'm sure there are still nice places to live and I'm equally as sure that you're going to wax lyrical about your own corner of paradise but deep down you have to know you're living in declining society. There's no respect, no discipline and no fucking hope.

Pick most of the countries on the planet and you could write the exact same.

Fvck me.
I was in Sicily last week.
Lovely place for a holiday, but the infrastructure is so evidently completely fooked - unasked for anecdotes about having to travel to the mainland for hospital treatment - a smell of shit on every corner - folk living in condemned buildings - fairly filthy dirty - my missus got kerb crawled twice in the middle of the day.
I loved it. ;)

But I wouldn't want to live there. The UK is paradise - with shit weather - by comparison

I never said it was OK... but it's 'humans' It's just how the world has gone now. I'm sure there's places that are less horrific than some... but truth is, not many and not all... Society is a shit-show.

Why?
As said, they are weed trees.

They're not indigenous. They drop loads of sticky crap onto cars, they are incredibly effective at reproducing so spread rapidly and inconveniently including many mis placed saplings which need removing. There's one near me and it's a fucking pain. I'd like it down but I think it's got a TPO on it, amazingly.

Not many trees are 'indigenous' - only the species that were here when our little land mass broke away from the big land mass next door. If we took all the non-indigenous species out the country would look like it did 450,000 years ago. It's not really an argument unless you want to bring all the things back that have gone extinct since then, live in caves and draw antelopes on the walls.

Sycamores were introduced only a few hundred years ago. You wouldn't be so flippant if you had one next to your house.

Given Yambo’s comments, I can’t help but think this thread is a metaphor for modern life…

Immigrant has been here for centuries bringing joy, solace, hope and encouragement to many
Immigrant is fatally attacked in its home, late at night, by unknown assailant(s)
Baying masses whip up fury saying it wouldn’t have happened had the immigrant just stayed at home

Perhaps it would be different if it were an oak tree…

I'm not a greeny leftie or anything but I do believe that all green spaces and trees, where possible, should be preserved - hate to end up in a big concrete jungle.

One of the draws to our current home for me was the trees on the property, when it was built in the last 60's the first owners had a professional landscaper in to plant other trees and shrubs around the original Oaks. I was handed all the plans when be bought the place.

Despite the Oaks all having TPOs and the huge amount of effort maintaining the garden I would not want it any other way, hate to see any of it destroyed and amazed that people thing what's happened up there is acceptable.

I had one next to the house at the previous house, didn't bother me particularly but my neighbour was a bit psychotic about it. When we arrived on moving in date we caught him up a ladder lopping branches off. They didn't much like the line of humongous larch trees along the boundary either. They knew they were there when they bought the place so, tough.

I keep picking the seeds off the cars at this house too. Not sure where they're coming from but we back onto woodland. Cars are parked under an oak tree - that makes a mess too and a bit of music when the acorns land. Shrug. The tree was here before me and I quite like it.

We had one too on the boundary of our old house, it was a massive pain in the hoop but wouldn't have had it removed. We did have a pretty heavy cut made on it by our tree surgeon as was getting dangerously near the house but at the end of the day it was there before the house was even built.
