New jacket required...

Minor Phil Collins reference there, but ignore... Anyway...

Finally killed my old Alpinestars Gunner textile jacket the other night. The replacement zip broke, and given it has already been replaced once, and other bits of the jacket are starting to fail, and it's nowhere near as waterproof as it once was, I'm calling it time... I need to replace it.

So... I need a autumn/spring textile jacket, sports type fit, relatively waterproof (it'll never be headed out into a deluge, but needs to protect me for an hour if I get caught in a light shower etc.), adaptable, looks half decent (sooooo much drab kit on the market these days!). I have full goretex touring kit for longer rides in bad weather, this jacket just needs to provide me with a convenient option for an hour ride here and there in potentially changeable conditions...

Now I will admit here and now to being a bit of an Alpinestars fanboy... However nothing in their current range grabs me at all, and from experience with the Gunner jacket, I would prefer something with a covered main zip next time...

Not looked at textile jackets in a while but I get SBS emails and noticed big discount on the Hinterland at the minute from an email I got yesterday. Not overly sporty though and no covered zip, but supposed to be waterproof.

I can get anything from Oxford, direct from them at cost price... I have some of their jeans, they're fine (but also a bit unexciting). I've got some cleaning products, and a couple of other bits. But honestly, as well rated as their modern clothing is, their styling department needs a kick up the arse! Maybe they know they do the drab, dull commuter look incredibly well and play to that market...? By all accounts, my mate who works at SBS says the Oxford Hinterland jacket and trousers have been decent sellers for him. But good as it may be, it screams "I ride an NC750 and want to bore you to tears with my mpg figures" I'm afraid...

The good bit about my relationship with Oxford (it's a work one, not personal FWIW, albeit I get on well with the guys there so they are happy to sort me out as and when for the odd purchase) is that Oxford are the UK Alpinestars distributor, which has worked well for me so far as I love Alpinestars gear on the whole... But like I say, no jacket in their range currently I like the look of or that suits!

Looks good, Dainese is always quality gear (you just usually pay for the name too), reviews seem pretty decent. Biggest issue is I can't get down to M&P in Swansea to try one on though, Dainese's sizing can vary I find... Might just give them a call, order a 54 and if it doesn't fit, pay for the return/restock and get them to send a 56...

Sooo...who do you think is looking at you and why do you care? Frankly, Mr Shankly, you can ride by me in 'poorly styled' drab, commuter gear and I do not give a flying one. I might wonder if you're dry but that's as far as it goes. I might have a decko at the bike if it looks interesting but really, I don't care what the rider is wearing.

That would be a compliment for some of my ramshackle, bargain basement, and clashing, outfits

Although I would struggle to match what my old mate BeeDubya called his 'milkman coat' (actually ex-oilrig jacket, complete with oilstains!).

I'll put it simply... IT AIN'T ABOUT YOU!!!

When riding a motorbike is one of the very few times I actually give a crap about what I'm wearing, and how it looks. I'm not trying to win any fashion awards, but if I'm paying decent money for something I want to feel and look good wearing it... "It'll do" ain't good enough basically!

Bought the Dainese one from M&P... No way I'd have paid £430rrp, but at £208 it seemed like a decent jacket for the price, and crucially it fits, looks good (IMO) and should keep me warm and dry...
