Do you honestly believe that the Chinese recycle stuff like that when they cost buttons to make? It's not worth their while.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Sat Sep 23, 2023 3:05 pmNot saying that one is, but you can bet your bottom dollar all the scrap ones end up on Ali Expressmangocrazy wrote: ↑Sat Sep 23, 2023 2:19 pm As posted in Jody's KTM 690 thread I found this on Ali Express after at least two minutes of searching:

"Recycle" means flog it to a gullible westerner who thinks they're getting one over the OEM

I think you'll find there isn't even a word in Chinese for recycle. Quicker and more cost effective to churn out a new widget.

As some have said, cars too.
Filly's four year old car had a fault. Garage eventually fixed it.
Hah! Mechanic took it for test drive - complete electrical shut-down in the middle of a massive roundabout.
Many hours (main dealer rates - but we had a fixed price deal) later, they gave up, couldn't find the problem.

If you want some proper horror stories, try some of the Aprilia RSV4 Tuono groups. Regular mechanical failures at low mileage. The example below is the gearbag from a 2021 bike with 2k miles.

Reminds me of the case hardening on my XT600 gearbox
I think Yamaha got the case hardening sorted by the late 80's,I never thought I'd see chocolate gears on a modern bike

I wouldn't be at all surprised if they just had a batch/shit load of gears from a supplier who just forgot to do the heat treatments!
You'd (probably not) be surprised how often that sort of thing happens

Re: Modern bike reliability
From personal experience, there has definitely been an overall downwards trend in reliability across the board since they heyday of the late 90's I would say... No bike is perfect, but when you look back at some of the bikes built back then, they so rarely went wrong that when one did, it was quite a shock from certain brands (Honda most notably).
Everything is built to a price of course, and with more and more electronics expected on modern machinery, and more and more emissions legislations meaning that you've got copious amounts of crap that you don't need or want on the bike that can (and will) go wrong too, the manufacturers have got their work cut out a lot of the time...
That said... Modern bikes are typically so much better to ride than their 25yr old equivalents, that the price is worth paying as long as the dealers and the brands at least have good backup/warranty ands after sales support. Which is of course a whole other topic!

Re: Modern bike reliability
All 90's Honda's were plagued with Reg/Rec problems. Mechanically they were pretty sound... except for Fireblade gearboxes, but I I think that was more down to owner abuse that a specific design flaw.mboy wrote: ↑Sun Sep 24, 2023 2:29 pm From personal experience, there has definitely been an overall downwards trend in reliability across the board since they heyday of the late 90's I would say... Re: Modern bike reliability
Reliability is why I bought my NC750X. They don't seem to have any issues (at least on the forums I read) which is the last thing I want when riding through Europe.
It is a bit dull though.

Sold one of mine to a courier and he expects an easy 200k out of them! His brother bought him down on a NC750s with 180k on it and sounded the same as my low-mileage one!

It's just the outer casing, no screen.
Now I have to try and get a refund
