HOMENEWSNEW BIKES Bobbies on bikes: Patrols get out of their cars and onto three wheels with UK-adapted hybrids
https://www.motorcyclenews.com/news/new ... -wmc300fr/
Northamptonshire Police are ramping up their use of a fleet of petrol/electric White Motorcycle Concepts hybrid three-wheelers by training non-motorcycle riding officers ahead of active duty.
The WMC300FRs are designed and built by UK firm White Motorcycle Concepts using the Yamaha Tricity as a base and the force took delivery of eight of them last September.
With two wheels up front, the machines can be ridden on a car licence and now the first two non-riding Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) have been put through a four-day training course so they can use the machines out on patrol.
The WMC300FRs differ from conventional police motorcycles because the standard 292cc four-stroke twist and go Yamaha engine has been combined with two 56V 12 amp-hour detachable lithium ion batteries to provide drive below 30mph. These are housed in a topbox made from recycled aerospace carbon fibre.
A central duct between the front wheels forces air through the vehicle rather than round it, which lowers drag and cuts emissions by a claimed 50%.
“It’s essentially a free ice-breaker for our officers. Policing isn’t all just enforcement, there’s a lot more to it, and it gives people an excuse to speak to us,” Neighbourhood Policing Team Sergeant, Greg Taylor told MCN back in February. “We’re not intimidating, we’re not scary people and we want people to come and talk to us. If we don’t know what’s going on, we can’t deal with any problems.”

The last paragraph pretty much sums up what's wrong with modern policing in the UK

Didn't realise you could ride them on a car licence. Is that true of the Yamaha petrol 'bigger brother' version that they use for the TdF?

I suspect its SMC which is recycled when it's still new Uncured offcuts are smooshed up to make that stuff everyone advertises as "forged carbon". Bit like using up the left over dough with biscuits.
There are a few firms recycling genuinely used carbon to be fair, which gets quite complicated.

No, the Niken is classed as a motorbike. MT 09 engine. The tricity and the other one that I've forgot can be ridden on car licence. Think it's summot to do with gap between front wheels.

Yes, you can, as long as the distance between the front wheels meets a certain criteria. If I remember correctly they're designated an 'L' code.Count Steer wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 4:48 pm Didn't realise you could ride them on a car licence. My mp3 300 could be driven on a car licence for that very reason.
Can't say if this applies to the big Yamaha thingy.

The Niken front wheels are too close (410mm) to be classed as a three-wheeler; you still need a bike licence and you still need a helmet. The original Piaggio MP3 was also a three-wheeler that needed a bike licence then someone realised if they made the track a little wider you could ride it on a car licence. For a short time, they sold both variants but that was daft so as far as I know all new MP3s can be ridden on a car licence. You have to check used ones though.
A good friend of mine went on a dealer test day when the MP3 first came out... she said it felt uncrashable, there was so much front end grip. She ended up taking it off road up a gravel fire road... she said it was far easier to ride on those roads than her BMW.

I rode @2xtwins Niken.... it was somewhat unusual, but a long way from a terrible bike... MASSIVELY big in the frontal area though when you're sitting on it.... but i kinda enjoyed it.

I wouldn't say the Niken feels "uncrashable", rather that it behaves like a front-wheel drive car if there is a loss/lack of front wheel grip and understeers when a normal bike would just have the front wheel wash out or tuck under. IME It certainly engenders more confidence in limited/reduced grip scenarios. The Spin Doctor wrote: ↑Thu Sep 28, 2023 2:32 pm

The bike journalist Mossy found out on a trackday, maybe even the media launch iirc, that the Niken is certainly not "uncrashable".
I still have the Trike, although it has not seen a great deal of action this year although we had a run up to the Bemsee meet at Snett and a family visit to Norfolk last month - just over 350 miles in the day - and it acquitted itself well.

Great they can now chop the wrong doer's heads off and save all that faffing about with the courts.
Blundering about trying not to make too much of a hash of things.
