Perfect. Look forward to the thread. I'll bring the lad too, which of us gets the Orbea and which of us gets the Liv, I dunno.

When out at Hopton on the Liv at the weekend it was slightly marred by the lack of gears, brakes, suspension, dropper on the Embolden...

So he's done me the deal of a lifetime deal and it appears i now own this

It's going to be interesting as i still don't 'like' how the ones i've ridden actually ride. However this is the 'lighter' weight/power version so should in theory be closer than a full-fat to normal. I also have learned to appreciate 'time' and place with them. For example at Hopton, Bringewood, FoD there are times when the boy is uplifting/coaching and we only have a small window of time really to get it done, with a manual with all the best intentions in the world you can't just knock out 500m elevation in a quick time and get it done, well, not unless you're Pidock. Sure i can get up it on a manual, but so so much slower and taking more time obviously.
I still don't see much point to one where i live... but many weekends i'm not actually where i live, i'm out and about in places where i can ride other things.

The Orbea though has the right spec in terms of bouncers, with Fox 36 and a Float X, both of which i already really like, so that'll help me along there.

Totally agree mate

I bought a "full fat" eBike as kinda thought I needed one in my armoury... Didn't get on with it, too heavy, not agile enough, deadened the riding experience for me. Got rid, and ordered the Orbea, and didn't look back.

interesting that you mention Bringewood there as it's quite local to me, and my mates ride Mortimer Forest a lot. Even when I was reasonably fit, I used to find riding there tortuous, the kinda place that felt like almost endless climbing for very little reward. An eBike changed that, and the Rise moved the game on yet again... Last time I rode (sadly August last year now, hoping to be able to ride again before New Year!) was @ Mortimer with a mate, and I finally managed to deplete the battery on my Rise... Not until we'd been out for almost 4hrs and done well over 20 miles with 1500m of climbing beforehand though! That was a mix of Eco and Trail on some of the tougher climbs, and it was perfect.

Descending wise, I've not ridden many conventional full suspension MTB's that are as fun/playful as my Rise is, it's incredibly well balanced and doesn't try to be a super long/low/slack Enduro bike which I quite like about it, albeit for a mid travel trail bike it's definitely long(er) and slack(er) than bikes of a few years ago... I've just ordered the Cascade link for the rear which will up travel to 150mm and add a bit more progression, will probably get some 160mm cranks soon too (I changed to 165's anyway when I replaced the turd OEM E13 cranks, but even shorter seems even better on these things!).

If you ride a full fat eMTB and use it in Boost/Turbo all the time, then yeah, the Shimano motors don't seem to like it... Go Bosch in that instance.

However, of all the brands using an EP8 motor or a derivative of it, collectively the Rises seem to have less problems than others... The lower state of tune in the motor seems to put it under less stress, and those buying the bikes are typically buying them because they don't want all of the assistance all of the time anyway...

Pretty much sums me up I think. It'll be ace I'm sure. I may see if it warrants a 1 Deg headset change

My mate is a mech at one of the online retailers fixing warranty returns, and he has just recommended one of these for his next door neighbour who picked one up about a month ago.

I guarantee that he wouldn't have if he had any worries about their reliability. 👍

I put a Reverse 10mm angle headset spacer on mine, effectively slackening it by 1/2 a degree.

Image

It has the same effect on geometry as fitting a 160mm air shaft would have done, but was a fraction of the price.

FWIW, I did an accurate 2 way measurement of mine and found the Head Angle to be 64.9deg static. Seems ok to me. I can't fit an angle reducing headset in mine though cos it's the carbon version, at least with the alloy version you get the option to do that but 64.9 is slack enough for me. I was dead set on keeping mine as close to a normal MTB weight as possible, so didn't want the heavier frame or larger battery, which was justified in the end as mine is only just over 19kg.

Dunno if you're on facebook or not, but the Rise owners page on there is actually quite a bit better than most owners' pages I find... You get the odd idiot moaning about it not being powerful enough (and the usual "you bought the wrong bike" responses), but mostly it's pretty helpful and informative. Quite a bit more so than the shit fight that is mostly the STW forum these days!

And then i decided not to do the deal... After riding the Slayer yesterday and looking at the space in the garage, i just don't really need it.

I do need to do a few things on the wifes Liv though in terms of braking, so that'll get sorted ASAP. But the Orbea is shelved.

Well now it really does appear I own an ebike of my own.

ImageIMG_20231202_132510 by Steve Weeks, on Flickr

Riding this today was absolutely superb. It's so much poppier, reactive, compliant than the full fat ebikes I've ridden, it's doesn't steam roller trails like they do.
Along with that the power delivery is way more intuitive, when you do half a pedal stroke it's very gentle, whereas the big boys at times buck you with a surge of power.
Straight lines and trails it flies down, jumps are nice, massively impressed.

When we got back to the van I said "don't put it in your van, put straight into mine"

And that as they say, was that
