TBF - I haven't ridden a TLr and the TLs I rode was one of the very early ones

I used to know someone who waited months for one when they first came out, then didn't like it when he rode it, he then had an affair with another mates wife and wondered why everyone hated him when they found out.

I knew someone else who had the steering head break off landing a wheelie (he was a twat)

TBF, I had a few friends with them when I had the TLs. They loved them and rated them.

From my limited knowledge (cos I ride stuff, don't read about it!! ) they had most (maybe not all from what the big cheese just wrote above!) of the problems of the TLs ironed out of them.

Check if it's the same rear shock cos apparently that was terrible on the TLs (I obviously didn't ride mine hard enough - except into the back of an Astra!)

But, like I say, I knew quite a few people that loved and rated them highly. I just never moved on from the TLs

I had an S too.!
Lovely but a fecking Suzuki and ultimately too fast for what I wanted it for (commuting). Sold it and bought a 750 monster and that was too blummin slow!

I like them.

At the time, they were slated by the press for being too long/heavy as Suzuki tried to fix all the issues they had with the S.

I think as a 'road' sportsbike rather than a 'track' sportsbike they'd be alright.

But what you really want is a nice oil cooled GSXR1100.

I like the look but didn’t when new.

Anyway, was offered in px for my aprilia but it turns out they wanted a straight swap so declined.

Interesting bikes though.

I would expect the 'prilla to be a better bike in almost every way... except for comfort and nostalgia.

I just assumed the Suzuki would be worth a couple of grand and then it would be worth a punt. I wouldn’t swap it for a bike worth nearly four.

The Tiller's are on the up, a nice bog stock, low mile one in the right colours could be worth 3.5/4k if ebay is to be believed.

But you'd want to be really sure of the history to do a straight swap tho!

I'm not that fussed to be honest. If it was a bike he was keen to get ride of and at a decent price I'd have gone for it, kept it if I'd liked it but knowing there was some money in it to cover insurance etc if I didn't.

I have to declare an interest as an ex-TLS owner, the TLR was a big, heavy, odd-looking whale, but a fast whale for the time. It still had the rotary shock that was so despised on the TLS, but they did try to improve it, alas to no avail. Both the TLS and the TLR benefitted greatly from an aftermarket shock. I fitted an Ohlins on my TLS and it then became the bike it should have been all along. But (IMHO) the TLR suffered badly at the hands of the ugly stick. Nearly 30 years on, if anyone offered me a TLR as PX on a mint RSV-R like yours I'd politely decline. If they continued to push it, I'd very impolitely decline. I wouldn't even consider a TLS in PX, much as I loved mine. I know the kind of owners they attracted... Sorry Nogs...

TBF, I wasn't a typical owner - could even wheelie a TLs FFS!!!


But I did track it, hill climb it and RLAC on all the roads


I would bloody LOVE another TLs, on two conditions -

- it's a 1997

- that a mate of mine that also hill climbed his (but won!!!) and basically specialised in overhauling/rebuilding them was booked to totally overhaul whatever one I bought!!

The second condition because I also know the kind of owners they attracted, and more importantly, I'd be buying a French one and I know how they treat bikes (especially bikes that go to race meets - bouncing of f the rev limiter all night etc etc!!)

Yeah, has to be a '97 - mine was and it was genuinely mentalist. I knew a guy who made F1 exhausts and he made me a full system with titanium cans and that bike was a rocketship. I was quite offended when they pulled me in for a recall and fitted a fuck ugly steering damper. That got binned very quickly...

Know what you mean about the French and bikes. I've never been to the Bol d'Or, but I know you can't expect to get any sleep for just that reason...

Why put your stand down when you can 'burn out' on the dirt until your bike is rear axle deep and stands up on it's own.

Down pipes not cherry red, rev it a bit more!

The more sensible ones just brought engines on stands and revved them until destruction.

Had a brand new one in 1999, raced one in 2005. Stripped of bodywork they are a small bike with a wheelbase not dissimilar to an R1 of the same year. With suspension work they handle great, power wise 120 at back wheel with cans and 130-135 full system. As a road bike they are comfy for a sportsbike and have a huge boot for snacks

Haha, yes, they are a proper cracker-oner's bike. As owned by canny lads who work down the clutch fitting depot, have many pirate sized gold earrings and are just in it for t'craic.
