The Cabildo of Lanzarote, the seven Town Halls and the folkloric groups of the island have agreed to postpone the celebration of Christmas 2020, the 'Navidad Isleña'.
The agreement was reached at a meeting of the island's Cultural Committee, in which the Island Corporation and the seven municipalities are represented, and after a meeting with the musical groups
According to the official communication from the Cabildo, the decision was taken on the basis of "the limitations resulting from the health situation caused by COVID-19".
It could not be guaranteed that the situation would be ideal for holding the concerts, even if they were held outdoors.
The Cabildo has now submitted a proposal to the communities, ethnic groups and choirs:
To hold the Christmas festival in the summer of 2021 as an alternative event, "if the health and epidemiological situation allows it".
"The idea is to have another equivalent celebration on the summer dates, but not to replace the regular Christmas 2021, which would also take place next year," added Alberto Aguiar, the Cabildos' responsible department head.
'Navidad Isleña' is a meeting organised jointly by the Cabildo and the seven municipalities with the aim of bringing folk music, folklore and dance, as well as Christmas carols and carols to every corner of Lanzarote and La Graciosa. The one in 2020 would have been the fourth edition of this festival.
