I test rode a new KTM690 SMC
My 690 duke had to go in for a fault so I thought I may as well take the opportunity to try the new SMC
First impression;
F me that seat is hard
WTF does the ABS light keep flashing
These forks are too soft. Thankfully as they are adjustable at the top, 2 more clicks on compression and it was a better.
It's on MAP 2, IDK if thats full power, tried map 1, kinda difficult to tell them apart!
It's not very fast, its OK but it WON'T wheelie , like literally, 2nd gear, roll off the throttle, whack it open again and ...... well nothing.
I've lusted after one for ages and I was thoroughly disappointed. Which does work out a lot cheaper
Back on my duke a couple hours later and it felt better in every way !

That's strange - I'd assumed that they were even madder than a mad thing (the mad thing being a Duke 690)... Perhaps something in the menus needs unlocking/disabling?

Lots of stuff on-line about disabling the anti-wheelie and the mode/map (2 iirc) it has to be in. Reviews don't make 'em sound tame but reviews tend to make everything sound marv.

Re: I test rode a new KTM690 SMC
The idea of the 690smc was better than the reality for me. But that's me as much as it at fault. The Duke just suited me better as a position, handling etc. Styling I loved the SMC but I struggled to get on with the taller front end at times
I really enjoyed it, but I never fell in love

I did wonder if it was in some sort of "Break in" mode. it did only have 580 Km on it !?mangocrazy wrote: ↑Thu Aug 17, 2023 6:14 pm That's strange - I'd assumed that they were even madder than a mad thing (the mad thing being a Duke 690)... Perhaps something in the menus needs unlocking/disabling?

Re: I test rode a new KTM690 SMC
Ah, yes. Quite possibly. My 690 Duke at the 600 mile (I think) mark kicked off with all sorts of blinkenlights telling me to go for a first service immediately, do not pass go, do not collect £200 etc. Quite possible that they also enforce a no wheelie policy during break-in, I guess.Jody wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2023 11:41 amI did wonder if it was in some sort of "Break in" mode. it did only have 580 Km on it !?mangocrazy wrote: ↑Thu Aug 17, 2023 6:14 pm That's strange - I'd assumed that they were even madder than a mad thing (the mad thing being a Duke 690)... I never tried a wheelie during break-in, to my eternal shame...

Re: I test rode a new KTM690 SMC
They do have anti wheelie and it works well. But bikes like these sell an image of wheelies stoppies and skids. Thing is if you can’t or don’t do them the bike won’t change that, all it then becomes is a slow commuter bike

Don't forget, this is the same engine, gearing, ECU as his current bike. Apart from being 10kg lighter there's no difference. How could it perform better?

You've been away from bike (magazines) too long.
10kg is big news, right?

Re: I test rode a new KTM690 SMC
As an owner, they need riding like they've been stolen. Feared I'd made a mistake buying mine for the first 200 miles, still not that impressed by it up til the 600 mile run in service, then after I'd had it serviced I started revving it above 6k and... Christ, it's a different bike above 6k!
The stock map is to blame... Specifically Euro5 is the problem. The bike runs crazy lean low down and they don't really come alive til about 6k+... Keep it above 6k, and even on the stock map the bike is superb, but a little tiring for sure. Everybody who's remapped theirs reports of much stronger midrange, proper power wheelies and a much more engaging ride when not riding it like you stole it.
Kept below 6k, yeah it's pretty dull stock... Anything but dull above that! Ride it like a 2 stroke and it'll reward in spades! Now I've learnt how mine likes to be ridden, it's like a cheat code on certain roads. For reasons of being caught short, I was 10mins late for a ride out with mates the other week, said I'd just meet them at the cafe, I knew the route... These guys are all seriously competent riders, but it was a tight twisty route... I was on my SM700... Despite a 10min delay, I caught them up by half way there!Dull is my experience of the KTM singles, I thought it was just me because I'm used to two strokes with loads of character, but perhaps they are just dull then.
Stock seat is unbearably hard yeah... Even the "ergo" seat is barely any better... But ridden like you stole it, it doesn't matter, you're barely sat on it, and you're moving around a lot. The only reason my Gasgas is up for sale right now is I sadly can't ride it for a while, I have had repeated surgeries down there (due to complications with bowel cancer), so can't sit on it for some time basically! Some owners have taken the stock seat and inserted a gel pad and reported much improved comfort mind. But it isn't a bike to sit in the same position on for long periods...First impression;
F me that seat is hard
It's an annoying KTM thing to remind you there's no ABS on the rear brake in mode 2... ABS works on the front, but you can lock the rear.WTF does the ABS light keep flashing
Both are full power... Map 2 removes the ABS from the rear brake (see above), and supposedly makes the throttle response a little sharper (I can't tell the difference here), but full power in both. It's on MAP 2, IDK if thats full power, tried map 1, kinda difficult to tell them apart!
They have 210mm of travel. They're not too soft at all. You're just not used to that kind of travel. I'm over 90kg, the rear shock spring is too soft for sure, could do with being 10N/mm firmer, but I can't get near bottom the forks out on the stock settings so far! These forks are too soft. Thankfully as they are adjustable at the top, 2 more clicks on compression and it was a better
Without wishing to sound like a broken record... It needs riding like you stole it. Proper old school 125 2t kinda commitment. If you can deal with this, on the right roads, it's the sharpest tool in the box! But its very unforgiving of a lazy riding style, and it doesn't like open roads. It's not very fast, its OK but it WON'T wheelie , like literally, 2nd gear, roll off the throttle, whack it open again and ...... well nothing.

Re: I test rode a new KTM690 SMC
I've got the Duke 690 (R), not the SMC but I'd concur with all of @mboy comments. It took me a while to realise you need to ride it like a two-stroke; do that and you'll be giggling into your helmet all the time. And a re-map really does give you the bike that KTM intended, not what the €urocrats decreed you should have.

Re: I test rode a new KTM690 SMC
Have you ever ridden a ZXR750R-K - the one with smooth bore flat slide carbs, adjustable swingarm pivot and single seat? I had a brief ride on one in the early 90s and that really was a 4T that thought it was a 2T - powerband between 9k and 12.8k, and bugger all below that. But then it was the homologation model for WSBK.Potter wrote: ↑Sat Aug 26, 2023 5:59 am *The nearest I found was my ZXR750H1, it felt a bit flat until you hit a certain revs and then it sounded like hell had opened up - truth be told it was still a bit flat even then because it was long and heavy, but it sounded epic and felt/sounded a lot faster than it was.
It encouraged me to ride like an absolute knob just to hear that induction roar and epic sound.

The original R6 was most likely a twosmoke, but nowhere near the all or nothing of a race tuned smoker.

Re: I test rode a new KTM690 SMC
Compared to the SRAD600 I rode it back to back with, the R6 was a midrange torque monster!Potter wrote: ↑Sat Aug 26, 2023 10:24 amI had one very briefly until I got rid of it, hated it.KungFooBob wrote: ↑Sat Aug 26, 2023 10:07 am The original R6 was most likely a twosmoke, but nowhere near the all or nothing of a race tuned smoker.
I found some pictures of it recently.
It wasn't so much like a two stroke, it was more of a shit four stroke that literally only made noise below high revs and then only acted like a four stroke when you screamed the knackers off it.
It was second-hand and I took it back complaining but apparently "they all do that sir".
IIRC I traded it for a newer style 900SS that I wasn't much for either but it was better.

Re: I test rode a new KTM690 SMC
I rode a friends CBR600 (last of the carb models) and I couldn't believe how flat it was in the midrange - wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding. It really did feel like a sewing machine, suspended on marshmallows. But then I had just stepped off my Aprilia Falco.KungFooBob wrote: ↑Sat Aug 26, 2023 10:33 am Compared to the SRAD600 I rode it back to back with, the R6 was a midrange torque monster!

Re: I test rode a new KTM690 SMC
My Dynojet stage 3 kitted GSXR750WN was a total PITA to ride because it behaved in a vaguely two stroke fashion... it stuttered and bogged down below 3k, drove a bit more smoothly from 3 to 6.5, then hit a flat spot that lasted till about 9k, then took off like a (rather porky) bat out of hell to the red line.
It was an arse-ache to ride around town, not much better on rural twisties, and was set-up so rich it struggled to get to the top of the Gross Glockner on a group tour. The only way I made it round the mountains for the rest of that trip was to remove the air filter to flow more air. At least it was clean up there!
I much prefer the buttery-smooth power delivery offered by a well-designed 4st four with a long flat torque curve. Yep, nothing 'exciting' happens, but god, they are forgiving to ride. On my XJ6, I found myself going round a hairpin in top, as I ambled along looking at the scenery waiting for my very slow brother to catch up on his new BMW 1250. That bike could also do a complete lap of the Brands Indy in one gear - handy for learning the circuit!
Not to say two-strokes aren't a lot of fun because they are... but sometimes ease of use is nice to have.

Re: I test rode a new KTM690 SMC
I loved my 690Duke and it was definitely 2 different bikes depending which side of 6k revs you were. I thought the XT660X was a much better real world/daily ride bike, but it was nowhere near as exciting as the 690.

Re: I test rode a new KTM690 SMC
Obviously no 4 stroke is going to behave in such a pronounced manner as a highly tuned 2 stroke, but the point is that it has a definite power band, where the 690 engine only really comes on cam around 5500rpm and starts really pulling from 6k up...

All talk of 2 stroke behaviour makes me giggle.
For centuries all trials bikes were 2 strokes coz of their amazing torque.
And my 300 GasGas kills my pal's WR450 on low down grunt
