Drifting, maybe, but with a large dose of target fixation too, I think. Both important to sort out at an early stage. Horrible accident to witness with a young rider.

Poor bugger. Once he started drifting, he never had a chance of getting out of that.
This is a good illustration of why UK rider training is NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE.
CBT is totally inadequate for riding on L plates, and it's hard to understand why instructors are still actively discouraged for explaining how a bike steers by the DVSA.

Indeed... but as a rule it's a consequence of getting into trouble in the first place - it tends to happen once we are starting to drift offline and towards something we don't want to hit - that's when we look straight at it and by then it's usually too late. It's incredibly difficult to 'look away now' when we have seen what we are going to hit.
Understanding steering results in us looking where we want to ride next as part of the process of keeping the bike on course.

Look where you want to go, because you'll go where you look, I had that drummed into me when I was a kid and I did the same with my ones when they got licences. There's a road sign on a bend with huge gaps on either side of it where I used to rake about when I was a kid, you'd need to be William Tell to hit it, but it gets taken out at leat 3 times a year by some child in his boy racer mobile.

That works right up to the moment you target fixate - then you hit what you're looking at. It's incredibly difficult to 'unfixate'.
