What he said. Shame it has the feel that half it's purpose is to launch 101 spin off character films, but that's the way Hollywood is now, nothing orginal for a long time.KungFooBob wrote: ↑Fri Aug 04, 2023 7:19 pm Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 has hit Disney+
It's on par with Vol2, Knowhere near as good as the first one.

Re Dune, I find I get a bit more critical of some aspects of sci fi as I get older. For example in a world with stuff like ftl ships with spicy navigators, shield walls, minute remote flying killer bugs etc
- it takes 21 people to operate a spice harvester that could be operated remotely
- they fight with blades and spears
- they have balloons to aid lift on a scorchio planet
Still, it all looked marv.

Re: Box Sets, Mini series, films, etc.
The fighting with knives thing is a key plot point innit? I've not seen the 2021 movie so I dunno if it's covered in that but I assume it is?
Everyone has personal shields which can stop bullets and laserz, only the slow blade penetrates the shield.
They're also not allowed any kind of thinking machine following a devastating war with computers (the Butlerian Jihad!) hence everything being labour intensive. I always wondered now the ornithopers fly in that case, they look like they need a bit of computer assistance
Honestly man, where you even watching?

Fairy nuff. I did read the book...in the 70s! OK how about - they successfully used 'bullets' against the Harkonnen ships, they can put a shield wall around a city...but not around a ship? The bugs that got Leto and nearly Paul were remote control - not from far away but still remote. You don't need thinking machines to operate an RC device.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Sat Aug 05, 2023 7:15 am The fighting with knives thing is a key plot point innit? (21 people on a harvester still seems a lot, are they using picks and shovels?!).
PS I watched the 'Children of Dune' series on C4? some time ago. It was OK.

Guardians 3 was a bit “meh”. Worst of the trilogy.

Re: Box Sets, Mini series, films, etc.
Having watched Dune I decide to rewatch the Children of Dune miniseries*. Quite a good cast- in parts (Alice Kreig is good as Jessica but Steven Berkoff doesn't look like a Fremen/Stilgar to me and Baron Harkonnen shouldn't be just a chubby English character actor). It looks pretty dated already, both in terms of the technology and the lack of diversity in the casting.
They should hand Villeneuve the whole franchise and let him redo it.
* 3 parter based on Dune Messiah and Children of Dune

Justified: City Primeval https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14263564/
This landed on Disney today, been looking forward to it so hope it lives up to the old Justified, yeah I know it won't, that they have to give a tobacco use warning at the start kind of indicates it's going to struggle.

To be fair, a couple of seasons of Justified didn't really live up to the old Justified.MrLongbeard wrote: ↑Wed Sep 06, 2023 1:00 pm Justified: City Primeval https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14263564/

Edit: The Guardian are quite positive on the new one. https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radi ... dApp_Other
I'm hoping City Primeval makes its way onto a format/platform I can access (ditto Slow Horses).
I bought Babylon 5: The Road Home a few weeks ago but still haven't got round to watching it. Maybe this weekend.

Very strange and Corden seems to mimic Gervais in After Life, or at least took some acting cues from him. Not sorry I watched it but not quite sure why I did either?!

The guardian slated the new Top Gun film because it wasn't gay enough and didn't have a woman in charge, I don't rate their reviews much.Count Steer wrote: ↑Wed Sep 06, 2023 1:26 pmTo be fair, a couple of seasons of Justified didn't really live up to the old Justified.MrLongbeard wrote: ↑Wed Sep 06, 2023 1:00 pm Justified: City Primeval https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14263564/

Re: Box Sets, Mini series, films, etc.
I'm doing a few of the Korean series at the moment... Having really enjoyed things like Squid Game for example, i'm currently mid-into 'Sweet Home' and it's like all the Korean series pretty gory and brutal
It's weird as i can't watch Euro dubbed series as the mouth movements look like they should be English but are obviously not, to the Scandi, German etc stuff i just can't watch. The Korean/Japanese stuff is so far removed though that it doesn't matter.

Liebes Kind (Dear Child) on Netflix is pretty good. Woman and child escape from captivity, but all is not what it initially appears. Good plot and plenty of twists.

The Killing Kind. I'd have bailed on it earlier on, but my wife and Sister wanted to see it out. None of liked it in the end.

Apres Vous. Subtitled French Film with Daniel Autiel at his finest. Very funny.
