F800S. It's rather jolly, with its dinky little panniers. Sounds nice as well, has an Akrapovic, and is quicker than I thought it would be. Great brakes, nice sharp handling, comfy, and a huge amount of BMW service history, not bad for 1500 quid. Original can as well, for MOT purposes.

On a slightly related note, the 906 Paso has been off on its holidays to Ducati Pro Team, to have the electrics fixed. All done (basically corroded Italian wires and connectors) the rest of the bike has been pronounced 'sound' so that's my Winter project, stripping, cleaning, polishing, fettling etc.

They're tiny. Don't stick out any further than the mirrors. But they're expandable as well.

Always had a soft spot for those

Panniers similar to those on my Trumpet, carry a wallet in each if I'm lucky.

My dad had one, his one and only ever BMW. He got so fucked off with it being unreliable that he gave it back to the dealer.

Dunno if his had a grey or black engine. :D

You’re thinking of the panniers that came with the BMW Tard15 limited edition. Unfortunately, BMW didn’t make many of them (you could only buy them directly from BMW’s HQ in Galifrey, Germany).

When my pal bought his new red VFR750 in about 1988, it was instantly labelled dog cock red.

And we still refer to that bike as the dog cock :)

50k miles, BMW service history until 40k, local bike shop after that. It should be OK.

Grey engined ones were the first generation and sound like a toolbox falling down the stairs. They really have a disconcerting clattering sound to them! They were plagued with problems too, but hopefully McS's one has had everything sorted out. in America they were bring a class action against BMW under their lemon law!

I had the same bike and as much as I loved it, it was forever cutting out and nearly got me killed a few times. I replaced hoses, idle valve etc but it still did it. Got rid of it in the end.

They are very economical but run very, very lean and I suspect that was why mine cut out as it was normally in traffic when it did it? My black engined F8R benefited massively from a remap, i'd imagine the earlier would even more so, assuming they can be done? Everything I just said aside, they are a much underrated bike.
