Every so often go on the hunt got a GS550, or NS400R, would love a GPZ900R, and sometimes even looking at a KR1S.

But never get past the looking stage. Not into the golden oldies 1960s or earlier. However ive started looking out for motor/motorbike shows near me - so never say never. Theres a VJMC (Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club) section near me and quite active, and the Kirkcaldy & District Motor(bike) Club has a very active section.
Its a pity i missed their show - i knew about it, but couldnt make it.

I had a spin on one years ago... I was ambling through Camber bang on the 30 limit at about 6000 rpm when a copper jumped out in front of me with his 'gotcha' face on... his mate holding the speed gun was reading the display and I saw him look over to the plod with the evil grin with a sad shake of the head. Fooled by the racket from the Japanese can on the bike

I quite like the idea of a small classic, like a bantam or an MZ. You never forget the MZ sound. My mate had one when we were 17. I had a GP100.

I do like the idea of an MZ TS250/1 Supa5, a very late 70's one.

Affordable to buy and run, no tax or MOT. Two-stroke and just fast enough.

You need to fit a Honda front wheel with tls if you want one to stop in a half modern way tho'

A Bantam was one of my learner options back in the mid 60s. I discounted it as it was too ugly and too slow and went for a Honda CD175 instead...

The CD was pretty horrid... but compared with a Bantam, it was sweetness and light.

My girlfriend at college had a 175 Bantam, and the damn thing was forever breaking down whenever we went riding anywhere. I particularly remember spending a happy half hour in mid-winter p!ssing rain at midnight at the side of the road trying to hack her electrics back together so that at least the headlight worked and she could see roughly where she was going.

Her follow-up, a T100S was hardly any more reliable - I lost count of the number of times that went wrong on a month-long 3000 mile tour of Europe, before it stripped the primary drive chain stripped the teeth of the clutch drum and I had to tow it the last 175 miles back home. And it added teeth-chattering vibration to the mix too.

Yes, the CD175 (the early 'sloper' design withe pointy tank, not the later one with the upright barrels and stodgy tank) was the best I could afford at the time, but was streets ahead of the Bantam of the day (also a 175 if I remember correctly).

I had a YDS7,it was a minter to look at,but man it was a slug. I bought a cheap YR5 with a borked 3rd gear and fixed it for not many pounds,it was like a wheelie prone rocketship by comparison.

I see YDS7s advertised for daft money now.

The styling of Yamaha's DSx 250s changed quite dramatically between the YDS5 and YDS7 (there never was a YDS6, was there?) and at the time I much preferred the earlier model's styling. Now it looks a bit frumpy. But in the 60s and most of the 70s I was riding 4T Hondas and wanting a 2T Yamaha. That all changed (for the better) in 1980, of course...
