Do you like some Double Ds?

I've decided it's time to replace my Shoei GT Air as it's a fair few years old now and getting a bit tatty now, particularly around the chin strap area and I thought I might as well replace it with the new, updated model.

But looking at it in the local J&S I find they have done away with the Double D strap and gone for some sort of fancy ratchet strap. I've had a helmet with something similar in the past and didn't really get on with it. I'm sure Shoei have improved things since then but why switch from something simple and infinitely adjustable? They still use the 2xD on other models.

I seem to remember watching a fortnine video about the different chin strap arrangements and the double D came out the strongest.

Anyway, I bought a Shark with the strap arrangement I like.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has a preference and won't consider anything else?

My Shoei has said ratchet-type strap. I was dubious, being a bit old-school, but it stays where it should and doesn't loosen over time. Not tested it by bouncing down the road yet, and I don't plan to any time soon either.

Same as Gremmers, first time with the ratchet strap it was "what is this witchcraft!" but now I wouldn't have anything different.

Only had 1 helmet with a ratchet which was Shoei back in the late 90s. TBH I quite liked it, not enough to hunt one out but I don't think it'd put me off a lid. I've had Sharks for a while now and they are all DD and I doubt I'll not carry on with Shark for the foreseeable.

All my recent helmets have been rachet. Seems to work fine. I wouldn't worry about it.

If the rachet is the long plastic thing that you click in to your comfort then I like these best, quick and easy. D ring is a bit more fat but the chin strap ain't no biggy, either will do.

This new survey is revisiting the previous work by TRL – Potential for Motorcycle Helmet Loss – where that report showed, “That helmet size and internal shape were important factors in helmet ejection. The tightness of the chin strap was critical to the force required for loss through roll-off.”

TRL says the previous data indicated that, “A large number of helmet users were purchasing helmets through the internet without first determining that they were of the correct size or internal shape, with the potential for increased helmet loss. This is a concern that has been expressed by a number of research studies.”

A helmet that's the correct size, with the strap done up, will substantially reduce the chances of it coming off. Tightness will help even more.

DDs for me. Simple, highly functional, infinitely variable over a given range.

The only downside is the flapping of the loose end if you haven't quite managed to get the pop button done right.

Anyway - D rings too here.

Interestingly, the guy that I work for tries not to have mountain bike helmets with a clip fix. I've heard him tell parents that the D rings are safer. The only lids that have the clip thing are the tiny ones (that also have an adjustable twist thingy at the back), guess the D ring would be more difficult to fit?

I was always led to believe (by whom, I have no idea!) that the point of the double D - besides simplicity - is that it's adjusted every time you do it up, thus it's more likely to be adjusted correctly? Being done up and snug is more important than the exact method of fastening?

Apart from hair growing (slowly) and perhaps wearing a different scarf or necktube, how much variance will there be?

Dunno, I can see how an adjustable strap can wriggle loose over time but I can't see how it would wriggle tight?

I once had a helmet with a seat belt type fixing but it slowly worked itself loose over time. I would never have anything other that a d-d again.

DD always, never had one come loose on me.

If they work loose over time, you just re tighten it again.
