Technology also has killed the printing press industry related jobs, since the 70s/80s.

The hundreds employed in foundries, boiling pots of lead for plates, the compositors with their letter type....all gone when they moved to web offset plates and desktop publishing........

See? Even desk manufacturers benefited.

You've probably guessed that I'm not really seeing the imminent demise of mankind just yet. I don't see why Screwdriver is so worried either. I'm sure the Carrington event that's just around the corner will stop the evil AI dead in its tracks. ;)

Mankind will probably suffer more in the west......

Whilst the likes of China, Russia ect are teaching their kids maths, fighting skills, engineering and survival, the west are teaching theirs to watch drag shows, be offended and to hate their own country.

Wonder what happened to Abbott? She was suspended by the Labour party after anti-semitic comments. Is she still under investigation for her hate?

Very amusing here in LA right now with actors & writers on strike.. then discovering that no one* really gives a fuck

DirecTV got in a spat with the company that owns Ch5 here & the entire network has been off the satellite for at least two weeks.

*apart from people in the industry.

There should be an investigation, or a short series of insightful YouTube rantings. As we're not being told, it must be a coverup. Mark my words.

In fairness, if all they've got to look at is you, that kinda makes sense....

The Print Unions hastened their demise as well with some truly awful practices.

"Especially the lies."

Please let me know how worried I am, I can't work up enough enthusiasm to be bothered.

I have started a dedicated AI thread and another for the Carrington (event which could be a monster). I offer up these observation from my internet meanderings or from whichever book I may be reading because I find them interesting and hope they may become informative.

I started this thread because it's the first time I have heard about the banks/financial industry busily creating a CBDC. I was hoping to discover what people thought about the impact this might have on existing cryptocurrency, the difference between its ability to either completely anonymise (like cash) or pinpoint a user as if they had subscribed to a digital ID. I could write everything I know about the financial industry on the back of a postage stamp (and still be wrong). There are some financial whizz kids on here who could shine a light on the subject.

But then we throw AI into the mix and its integration with CBDC makes it a rather obvious weapon for state control of the population. Suddenly this nonsense about ESG makes sense, as does the nonsense about carbon credit. However, these manipulations are unlikely to impact me personally so I use the phrase "worry" in the present tense (while I am writing it) to indicate my concerns regarding the obvious manipulation that implies.

Then after I have dispensed with all the personal attacks, insults and straw man arguments, I'll pop out to the shed and "worry" about something else.

I'll bite; I think it's legitimate to have concerns about a technology that can impact all sectors of society, rather than having happy ears on and blindly embracing it. BT have already announced that 55,000 people will be replaced by AI by 2030, and don't think they are unique in this. AI can, and will, replace highly skilled workers. What are all these people supposed to do in order to earn a living and survive?

Surely AI is/is going to be intelligent enough to ask the same question and provide an intelligent answer.

All by itself.

Surely it will understand that it, in itself, is a problem. ;)

The combination of AI and CBDC could certainly be a formidable force for good.

Good for who though?

Surely that's an argument against authoritarian states, not technology.

Who?
Whomever.

I spend a lot of time in a country with full biometrics, face recognition, finger print, eye scan, all on your ID card (and their system).
When they arrest people it's usually a relaxed affair, they wait for them to turn up to a public place, a unit moves into place and then nicks them.

When we wanted to go to the shop during covid we had to use an app to ask permission, sometimes it was yes, sometimes no, we watched a guy get a £1000 fine on the spot for not adhering to it, he showed up in a public place without permission, the system clocked him (ANPR, Face recognition, etc), the old bill turned up and fined him there and then.

Most people get nicked at the airport, the eye in the sky sees them do something wrong, then the five-0 sits back knowing they'll try to leave at some point and they can be picked up and conveniently taken away.

The criminals in the UK are lucky that the UK authorities couldn't organise a piss-up in a brewery otherwise that would all be in place already.
That is in place in the UK, that's how they catch people. They know where people are from ANPR, cell phone cell connection, CCTV everywhere. Most of the time hardened criminals are caught from exactly that data in the UK.

Well I'm convinced. I'm going to exchange all my money for Krugerrands and keep them under the floorboard.
