Re: I can't ride fast on the road anymore
I wonder if for many it's more down to the roads/traffic as much as anything else ? Not everyone has roads like Wulls, not everyone has smooth looking fast sweepers that seem devoid of traffic that he seems to have ? Maybe it's his early starts for work, maybe it's living the wastelands up north... But you simply don't seem to find roads like that here.

Christ, if the numbers being spouted on this thread are anything to go by, I might as well hand my licence back
I've never entertained entering a corner on the roads at 3 figures. I've never felt the need to get passed 100 on a ride out, although it occasionally happens if the road is perfect. I suspect if I did ride with someone half decent, I'd be left well behind. But hey, that's what trackdays are now for, right?

100% the early commute, at any other time it’s ridiculous. Some of my favourite roads are now ruined because of how busy it is.weeksy wrote: ↑Wed Jul 19, 2023 9:53 am I wonder if for many it's more down to the roads/traffic as much as anything else ? Re: I can't ride fast on the road anymore
Fastest I've driven on the road recently (as in, the last 5 or so years!) was in a car. It was on the Autobahn TBF, where cruise control + big engine + no speed limit is a wonderful combination.tricol wrote: ↑Wed Jul 19, 2023 10:01 am Christ, if the numbers being spouted on this thread are anything to go by, I might as well hand my licence back

I think I've probably had a higher top speed on the Bonnie than on the CBR in recent times. (Indicated) 100mph on the former is an event, on the latter the bike is kinda "yeah so what? You can twist the throttle....and?".

Re: I can't ride fast on the road anymore
In my 20's I hit 120mph every day on my commute, I hit 120mph on the Grimethorpe by pass the other week on my GS and my brain couldn't cope, it's like the frame rate was dropping because of too much happening on screen at the same time.

Re: I can't ride fast on the road anymore
The roads were quieter in Suffolk 20 years ago and also a lot smoother, I was also 20 years younger and a lot stupider (braver), I started riding in the 80s and it was considered normal to go everywhere as fast as possible, I've got 5 speeding convictions and a load of dead friends to show for it.tricol wrote: ↑Wed Jul 19, 2023 10:01 am Christ, if the numbers being spouted on this thread are anything to go by, I might as well hand my licence back

Re: I can't ride fast on the road anymore
Different ages I expect. Like @KungFooBob in my 20's on my Blade I used to do big numbers all the time. There was one week where on the Fri I realised I'd done a minimum of 130 mph every morning on my way to work. And this was at 8.45am on the North Circ in London. I doubt that would be possible now, but even if it was there would be no way I'd be doing it!tricol wrote: ↑Wed Jul 19, 2023 10:01 am Christ, if the numbers being spouted on this thread are anything to go by, I might as well hand my licence back

Re: I can't ride fast on the road anymore
This is definitely a massive factor. I can't remember the last time I rode on a road like Wull's. Single biggest factor for lower corner speeds for me is not knowing if there is gonna be gravel/pot holes in the middle of the road. Often I turn in and then end up having to adjust my line to either the inside/outside of the lane as there's a big arsed patch of gravel for 2m right down the centre of the lane. In turn that means I often compensate before I get to a corner and then you're not on the optimal line.weeksy wrote: ↑Wed Jul 19, 2023 9:53 am I wonder if for many it's more down to the roads/traffic as much as anything else ? Even on roads I know reasonably well which don't have gravel it only needs a few days of rain in the previous week to occasionally wash field crap into the road. State of UK roads are shocking.

Re: I can't ride fast on the road anymore
There are still roads like that here, but you need to get out of bed early. I can ride for hours sometimes and only see a handful of vehicles. These are the times those living in busy areas find difficult to imagine and some folk think you are full of shit.weeksy wrote: ↑Wed Jul 19, 2023 9:53 am I wonder if for many it's more down to the roads/traffic as much as anything else ? Speed is largely irrelevant if time and place are considered.

And all speedos over-read, particularly Hondas. 'Tis why I go by the satnav if I really want to know.Supermofo wrote: ↑Wed Jul 19, 2023 10:39 amDifferent ages I expect. Having said that, my satnav tells me things like this so I'd like to see satnav evidence used in court. Edit: Even if I flew off of a Pyrenees mountain I wouldn't reach that speed

Speed and elevation from the same log. I have no idea why it randomly peaks like that.

Yeah, highest I saw was 170 odd, I'm guessing real 155 sort of region.Trinity765 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 19, 2023 1:10 pmAnd all speedos over-read, particularly Hondas. My 625 KTM speedo worked off magnets on the front disc and it would have a right fit now and again. I wheeled the bike backward in my garden and it logged a max speed of 466mph Was still on there when I sold it.

Re: I can't ride fast on the road anymore
The highest I saw was 190+ on a 750 SRAD, I think you can safely knock 25mph off that, probably 30mph, SRAD speedos were very optimistic.

Re: I can't ride fast on the road anymore
The highest I've ever seen on a Speedo was 210mph at the end of the Catalunya front straight in 2001 on a Crescent (they were Suzuki back then) fettled early Hayabusa- don't think it had 200 gee-gees but it was still an absoloute missile in a straight line and ate Gixers for breakfast
The highest real speed I've seen was 179mph on the Garmin Satnav on my old ZZR in SoF back in 2013-14-ish.
I never go above about 50 these days, unless I'm on the MTB.

I saw 126mph on my GPS once... in my Saxo VTR. On a downhill bit of the A1 where it's four lanes at Peterbog.

Until car 5 pulls out to OT car 6 and you have a speed differential of >50mph.

I think I’m also in the group of the the older I get the faster I was. I’m also more conscious of ‘community minded’ people with dash cams.
