I still wouldn't have got any money. The most they'd hand out is 3k and you have to make prior arrangements for that much.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Wed Jul 19, 2023 5:46 pm Next time take a balaclava, they'll definitely notice you then.

What's stopped a terrorist doing that for the last 40 years? Banking has been online at least that long even if the public weren't using it on computers.

I tried to take £10k out in the UK and I needed to give notice - to get my own money.

I'll be going into a Turkish bank next week with M to cash in a time deposit and I'll take my half of the cash to my own bank in a poly bag and stick it another time deposit there. As you say Potter, it's my money.

Re: Central Bank Digital Currency
Well once again that unelected man Farage* has changed the course of UK law and politics!
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-66247057
"In the Commons on Wednesday, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said it "wouldn't be right" for financial services to be denied to those expressing lawful free speech and said the government would be "toughening the rules around account closures" following a consultation.
The BBC has been told this is expected to include giving customers more notice of planned account closures, and the rationale behind them, and therefore more ability to appeal decisions."
As I said in t'other thread, from what I gather this move was in the works long before Farage got involved, but I'm sure the exact sequencing of events will escape the reporting.
*Yes I know he was an MEP, shut it

Re: Central Bank Digital Currency
The arguments for CCTV were about making us safer, and for most of us (me included) was fair enough. However, CCTV lead the way for speed cameras, because it's making you safer, which I don't agree with. We can argue whether CCTV is more evil than speed cameras, etc, but I think we can all agree that both have impacted our lives.Yorick wrote: ↑Wed Jul 19, 2023 12:43 pm Folk are worried about AI watching them, but live a place with a million cameras watching them
Research by Clarion Security Systems estimates that there are over 942,562 CCTV Cameras in London's 607 square miles, equating to 1552.82 CCTV cameras per square mile. (2022) The numbers of CCTV cameras in London vary and the data is often based on old estimates or research.
Sure, speed cameras ruining a road we used to like riding, isn't the end of the world to most people, but it is to us.
Others will see CCTV as ruining their lifestyle.
AI is being introduced in the same manner - "It'll assist everyone, make your life better." I don't believe that for one moment. What's happened to the unskilled market is now coming home to roost in the semi and skilled workforce.
I'm not a conspiracy theorist, far from it, but I am concerned about how corporations will use AI in order to cuts costs, and where the replacement work will come from.

Re: Central Bank Digital Currency
There are certainly changes afoot. When Baby D was first born I did have serious thoughts along the lines of "maybe we should bias her upringing more towards creative endeavours" thinking that AI was going to make a lot of jobs redundant over the next half century. Turns out, it looks like creative jobs will be some of the first impacted by / lost to AI which basically no-one guessed. Just as well I didn't act on my own musings, but TBF she's still only 5
This is on the same scale as the mechanisation of farming a few centuries ago, but even more far reaching.
I do kinda have to stick up for the evil corporations a touch. "They'll do anything to make a profit". I don't actually disagree with that sentiment, but you dear reader (plural you, no-one in particular) probably only work because you have to/you want money and not out of the goodness of your heart. Different side of the same coin.
If AI's doing all the jobs and no-one is getting paid, who exactly is buying all the stuff from these giant corporations anyway?

I agree, if AI is doing all the work, nobody can buy the product. Even if AI is doing 50% of the work, who can buy the product? Where is growth going to come from? etc, etc.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Wed Jul 19, 2023 8:21 pm There are certainly changes afoot. AI is different from every other workforce revolution. Mechanisation impacted society, however it also created a massive supporting industry that required a workforce. Why does AI need a huge workforce?

Re: Central Bank Digital Currency
Sorry to subselect but that is the critical observation here. The advent of AI is going to have a seriously dramatic effect once way or the other and no one, not even those eggheads working within the industry, knows which way it will go.
Even then, let's say AI does provide incredibly positive benefits. Incredible art/videography (aka porn), amazing technological advances (weapons) and brilliant financial strategies (brilliant for who?)
I'll stick to the last one in this thread which relates to the banking industry, we have discussed the synchronicity between AI and crypto in the other thread. But even if AI is human friendly and is willing/able to provide humanity with extraordinary financial management, will those benefits be shared among the general populace? Or will it become yet another mechanism by which the rich get richer?
I know which scenario my money is on.
<Klaus Schwab> that's not your money, all of the money belongs to us...

If it clears the weeds in my garden or cleans the windows, I'll take notice.
And maybe cleans the pool.
