Get a grip fella. I've not insulted you, not called you names.. I've observed and commented.

You're not having a rational discussion with anyone other than yourself here... Can you not see that ?

I'm certainly not trying to look clever in the slightest. I just completely disagree with your train of thought. On this and on most subjects. That's not me having a pop, that's just me disagreeing.

Just because you don't like how discussions go, doesn't mean someone is personally insulting you. You're welcome to express an opinion on any subject you like, just as i'm equally allowed to agree or disagree with it
Screwdriver wrote: Wed Jul 19, 2023 12:49 pm I would be much more interested in detailing why you don't think AI is going to have any effect than this constant stream of personal attacks.
I don't need to detail it.. I don't think AI will or won't, i don't much care... i'm pretty sure computers will develop a form of intelligence at some stage of the universe, however that doesn't instantly mean it's in a good way. Maybe they'll gain the intelligence and instantly cure cancer, solve global warming, create a warp drive and make the world 10000 times better than it is... That's equally as much likely to happen as them bringing instant doom.

And the nail head was much easier to see in what he said because it wasn't buried in boilerplate guff about Bill Gates etc.

Honestly, you lose peoples interest in anything if you keep wrapping it up in that sort of 4Chan stuff. It's a shame because the real issues get obscured.
It is difficult to avoid those obvious connections. There are issues with digital currency, there are issues with AI but it becomes a much bigger issue when you combine the two. As for Bill Gates, you can use that cunt as a marker. If he is involved in anything, you can predict that thing is not going to be good for society in general.

I am surprised any competent, intelligent computer savvy person would be so dismissive of this watershed moment in human history.
I'm astounded you actually function each day without running round screaming... You seem to be completely obsessed by all this and thinking the end is nigh

My only criticism of those historical products is that they have funded this megalomaniac and allowed him to play God.

Oh yeah. He's donated it to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Who benefits from that I wonder?

I said the same about Farage last week, on the same subject hilariously, but apparently my reasons aren't good enough and I'm just a Marxist who hates rich people.

Who the fuck writes cheques, anyway...? Oh, seemingly every branch of the UK Government do.
Just exhumed my cheque book. I have written 8 cheques in the last 8 years, the last one two and a half years ago, and one of them was to a sodding bank who would NOT let me open a new account by electronic transfer, no they needed an actual paper cheque. As I recall this was a year or two back, about the time that the clearing banks were agitating to stop cheques completely. Obviously Clydesdale Bank did not get the e-mail.

I don't have a chequebook.

I bet I'd get a whole battery of questions from the bank regarding why I need a chequebook if I asked for one :D

When Santander re-opened my current account the first thing they did was send me a cheque book. Then they sent me a PIN number for the card that was 'posted' but never arrived. Then they sent me another PIN number for a second card. That card didn't arrive either and when I told Executive Communications for the 4th or 5th time that I still hadn't got a card I got a very nice letter from another department telling me they couldn't and wouldn't send cards to Turkey.

I guess with communication that bad, any data they have on you is pretty safe.

I was Treasurer for an am-dram outfit and membership was £5. People could pay by bank transfer (nightmare to keep track of) but 80% paid by cheque - including at least one from Coutts.

10% would pay cash at the AGM.

I dreaded going into the bank to pay that and the box office payments in - so did anyone behind me. :(

Good point and well made.

When they didn't know how to give me my money - the cheques were taking so long the cancelled the first ones they'd sent I told them that I would be in Tonbridge on a particular Saturday and at a particular time. They could give me my money in cash over the counter after I'd proved who I was. True to my word, I went into the Tonbridge branch and had a chat with Matthew (iirc) who told me they couldn't give me my money. He did tell me though that it wasn't Santander that were actually doing the closure but a separate, wholly owned (by Santander) company that did the dirty work after Santander had washed their hands of you.

I was dealing with morons who had no idea how to communicate or think on their feet. I even offered to pay the £1 fee and do the transfer of my money through Global Web Pay which I'd used a lot in the past. They couldn't even send mail by recorded delivery ffs!
