Beekeeper forgot to put frames back in the hives, bees built this.

Apparently allows for airflow and heat regulation.

One of the great mysteries...do Bees actually know to build it that shape using hexagonal cells as a base, or does that shape(s) just emerge naturally out of a set of simple rules.

IIRC such shapes just emerge. Not just bees, lots of insects manage to create complex, and very efficient shapes of stuff.
