Not a motorbike but 'the ultimate driving machine'. What was the car you bought after a BMW called then? :D

Same for the 800's which are called f650gs, reusing the name of an actual 650cc bike.
Opposite is the Yamaha MT-03 (where a 300cc reused the name of a 660cc)
Honda CB-1 (400cc)

The Honda 400Four was 408cc.
Rounding to the nearest 10,50, or 100cc up or down is reasonable, whereas being specific but inaccurate is not. For example the Ducati 749 is actually a 748cc bike.

What he ^ said. Rounding up or down to the nearest 50 is acceptable.

I seen to remember that my first car, a BME 316, was actually a 1.8 ltr engine, but used the 316 moniker because it had a carb when the rest of the 3 series at that time were injected. (E24 series iirc)

A lot of the BMW car badging in the olden days was related to which German taxation class it fit in rather than engine size.

Totally feckin' made up now of course, the same 2 litre 4 pot appears in all kinds of 316, 318, 320, 330 etc. models which previously would have been 1.6, 1.8, 2.0, 3.0 etc.

The "63" series AMGs have never been 6.3, closest they got was 6.2 and now they're as small as 2.something like.

I remember first seeing 35 on the back of a small Audi and thinking 'yeah, good for you, go on!'

But 54 or 80 would make it sound like a beginner's bike. Ironic really considering the top speeds would be about the same

I see 35 and 40 on Audis these days - I bet they're still really using that rough old 2.7 engine though [retches uncontrollably].

Four Twenty-Seven though  Just sounds so cool.

Or even a Boss Three Five One, even though it's got less than 351 horsepower from that huge engine :D

Many things disappoint me about modern humanity and BMW's digression from nomenclature which accurately reflected displacement is one of those. Also their move to habitually using turbochargers. That said my 2015 530d had a lovely, lovely engine.

And the electric screen was pretty much pointless. I think I rode one of them back in t'day. The engine was the only thing to commend it.
