Cheers, I just had a look and there are some good deals on second hand DSLRs, they're a lot cheaper than when I last looked, I've got a eBay bid on a Sony A230, for £50 it could be mine.

You can buy my bundle of Canon stuff if you like...Mrs. D was gifted a fancy pants Nikon a few years back and all our investment has been in that brand since.

I've got whatever Canon's base model was ~10 years ago, plus a ~400mm lens IIRC. And the 'standard' one it came with. If it's still intact in the loft you can have it for less than eBay would pay, if you like?

Do you have a late iPhone? If you enable magnifier in your control centre you can get a 100x zoom. Its pretty handy!

Loads of phones have reasonably generous (for a phone) optical zoom these days too. Mine, which is Mrs. D's hand me down, has 0.5x (i.e. wide), 1x and 3x all done with different lenses. Her new one adds in 0.25x and 10x as well.

Big time. If you look at a phone photo on a decent monitor at 1:1 ratio, then they all look pretty shit, especially if compared to an SLR... obviously enough really given the sensor/lens/cost differences. A $20 camera inside a phone is never gonna compete with $1000+++

Something to consider - whether phone or camera - is shutter lag.

You need to know how early to take the shot.

We've got a coffee table book of printed snaps from our honeymoon (not like that ). A friend of ours who's a keen photographer just flicked through it and was able, without hesitation, to say which pic was phone, which was little point and shoot and which was DSLR

Yep. It does get harder all the time with all the latest software tricks, but there's still no substitute (yet) for a fat piece of expensive glass. Fake shallow depth-of-field is very common now, but it looks appalling in almost all cases. Very easy to spot if you've ever spent any time at all taking 'proper' photos.

Budget upped to £500

Been reading reviews and lots fail at auto focus when moving the camera.

I'd like it to be able to follow bike round slow corners.

Definitely worth looking at an older SLR and maybe a couple of lenses with that budget.

The entry-level models will all have fully auto settings, and even 'modes' to dial in the right settings for different settings, but I would most definitely urge her to spend even a short amount of time trying to learn the basics of how cameras work and can be used. You can spend years learning, but even one hour will transform the photos you can take, as well as the enjoyment of taking them. Endless free resources online, and bound to be someone doing group training nearby. You're retired, aren't you'? This is the kind of shit you have time for now...!

But bigger zoom lenses can be bought later?

D = digital.

What's difference between SLR and DSLR?

None necessarily. SLR means 'single-lens reflex' and means that the light comes through the lens and is bounced by mirrors and prisms into the film or sensor.

The 'D' just adds that it's digital, so always a sensor rather than film. It's a vaguely redundant term now though as about 99% of SLRs have been digital for years and years. More useful to talk about fSLRs when specifying film.

If you have friends on the island with a selection of kit, it might be worth setting up a try out day before spending out.

Find a bend similar to what you envisage on-track, position Penny the reasonable distance away, with mate to provide guidance.

See what lens length is actually needed and how she gets on with the weight and bulk of the camera & lens.

Also, you'll be needing a suitable rucksack or carry case too.

Any (D)SLR will have interchangeable lenses, so you can buy and switch to suit the need.

A 'compact' camera will normally have a lens that retracts into the body to keep it smaller when not using. Has nothing to do with whether it's a zoom lens or not, it's just packaging. But these will never be interchangeable, they come with a single lens.

Higher end compact cameras might have interchangeable lenses, like a mini version of an SLR.
