A few less degrees in Meeja Studies and Performing Arts. Then we coukd afford to fund the degrees.

One of Mrs. D's old Uni buddies, who also went to work at the same IT firm she did when first graduating, sacked it off after abotu 10 years to be a gas fitter instead
I don't think he earns particularly more/less than he did before, but he does get to drive a van now
He makes a decent living as a gas fitter using one useful skill he learned in the office though. Actually answering the phone

TBH, a law degree isn't particularly recommended by lawyers as the best path.Potter wrote: Thu Jun 22, 2023 2:47 pm I wouldn't advise any young person to go to Uni to study anything other than medicine, law or engineering
Though they do obviously require a good degree, just something more interesting that people are less likely to drop out from.
I would suggest there are many other useful degrees though. Many professions insist on (or at least heavily favour) degrees. Not just the trad medicine/engineering roles, but a lot of creative stuff like design, user experience etc. Plenty more things have been invented since law and engineering were which need to be learnt.

I actually feel sorry for people coming in to my industry now - require a MEng or MSc with CEng to be taken seriously, unfortunately those that do generally have zero common sense......

Apologies to the sparks or plumbers but it's not exactly mind expanding is it?
The whole point of Uni is that it is supposed to give you time to think, grow, discuss, analyse.
My son-in-law was a teacher and got pished off with the low pay and conditions, so went back, in his mid 30s!, to retrain as a Sparks. Now, very early on in his new career and with the lowest sparks qualification possible, he is earning more than he did as a teacher. And with the potential of much more to come. This is great. The downside is that he generally works with total morons.

FiL and BiL were Sparks for the Petrochemical industry, they made very silly amounts of money.
One stated out as a spark down the pit and the other a house basher.

Re: Insignificant/ Significant things that BYP or just wind you up a little
Regarding 'not using' a degree, I did jobs for a few years that were directly related to it. Then for more years, I didn't, but I would never say any of what I did was wasted. Apart from the experience of being independent, feeding myself, managing my own money etc etc etc the science and tech stuff became a way of thinking and tackling problems. Having done some maths and stats, thermodynamics, lab work (eg I could still build a vacuum rig, a bit of glass work, brazing, lathe work etc) has been of use in lots of situations.
Maybe the same is true of Media Studies, History of Art and 'Classics', dunno, never did 'em but if that's what people want to do, good luck to them. Just don't treat it like 'more school' and go trotting off back home at every single opportunity. Your parents gave you wings, start flapping.

"This car is 10 years old, so has some age related marks"
...no, there are no such thing as age related marks. A car doesn't start marking due to age, marks are from carelessness and damage, not age.

No, carelessness like actually using your car.
Re: Insignificant/ Significant things that BYP or just wind you up a little
Stone from other cars would be damage. Carelessness is something like hitting something whilst parking.weeksy wrote: Thu Jun 22, 2023 6:58 pmCarelessness like stones from other cars?Ant wrote: Thu Jun 22, 2023 6:42 pm "This car is 10 years old, so has some age related marks"

Never owned a red VW or Nissan? Both turn pink with time, even somewhere as devoid of sunshine as Ireland.Ant wrote: Thu Jun 22, 2023 6:42 pm "This car is 10 years old, so has some age related marks"

My truck is 15 months old and the entrance steps and various other bits of trim are showing wear and tear.
Joys of motoring, innit?
Re: Insignificant/ Significant things that BYP or just wind you up a little
I'll never own a red car, they all go pink. My first car was red, that went pink, so I said I'll never have a red car again. Years later I had another red car, then went pink, so I said I'll never have a red car again...Bigjawa wrote: Thu Jun 22, 2023 8:41 pmNever owned a red VW or Nissan? I have a red car. It is still red, and 6 years old. I expect a red Lexus to stay red. For the foreseeable (ie 20 years) future.
Quality, innit.

I had a Mk2 Golf GTI 8V 90 Spec.
It was quite pink.
The bloke I sold it to sent me a picture after he'd spent several hours with some cutting compound and a polisher, it was almost red!

I had a Volvo V40, it was also quite pink. After an hour with some T-cut it was red again, but it needed redoing every 6 months.

Folk who bugger about with food.
Smoked salmon. I love it. Ever since I went to a smokery thingy in Scotland in late 80s.
We have a fave local place in great location that does amazing salmon baguettes with avocado, cream cheese and salad in granary roll. Yum yum
Today the salmon was bright red and tasted shite.
Apparently they'd decided to marinate it in some strange flavour. Was shite.
Won't be going back there. Muppets.
