How to make progress in a car

I've had an offer that I can't turn down. My second cousin, early 30s sent me a message - would I be interest in doing some touring with him - he has a "Beamer but as it's all kitted out for sports / track". Erm...yeah ok.

I used to drive Escorts (RS2000) and Cortinas like I'd stole them when I was young but with no proper training and I cringe now at how stupid I must have been and how lucky I was (and those who shared the road with me). I then went through Mummy years and then got a bike so I've not driven "fast" since then.

I've done lots and lots of advanced training on the bike.

What skills are transferable from bikes to cars and what aren't?

Sorry. I've been invited to go touring in a car as I'm the one who knows the roads and I like to go fast.

I've hired cars and taken them on some nice roads and I think I was a better driver for all the biking I've done - I've put that down to reading the road, taking notice of road signs and looking ahead.

Is there anything you must not do in a car that you can do on a bike?

Do you do three stage overtakes in a car?

I don't want to give the lad wrong advice.

1. Move closer to the car in front if you anticipate that there may be an overtake opportunity
2. Move to the offside for the view but don't accelerate
3. If it's on, go for it

Watching the vanishing point, scanning, taking note of road signs and road markings, etc.

Never feel the need to make progress in a car, it just makes me feel like a w@nker. But on the bike it's expected (and french road users positively encourage it) not that it makes much difference, as over any distance the car driver will be cruising past while I'm refuelling and stretching my legs.

BTW this isn't so much about "fast", it's is about driving on nice twisty roads and having fun without being a dick (if that's even possible). I'm looking for advanced driving tips that are specific to cars.

This is what I am looking for. So, if you're planning an overtake in a car what do you do? I can count the number of overtakes that I have done in my car on one hand.

I reckon I probably cover ground quicker in my car than I do my bike Modern cars are just so easy to drive fast, they're hugely capable. Something they get criticised for in fact.

I can't imagine there's much difference between bikes and cars in this regard. Yeah OK road positioning matters far less in a car (or you have less option anyway) but nearly everything else like observation is cross-compatible?

So, if you're planning an overtake in a car what do you do?

Hang back a smidge, get obs of the road ahead, drop it a gear and mash the shit out of the go fast pedal, it is also bad form for you to show brake light to the car you have overtaken so keep your boot in.

Never heard of the 3 stage overtake but its what I do anyway by the sounds of it. This is another one of those weirdy beardy codifying the obvious things innit?

I used to like making progress in slow cars, judging the overtake so I got the run up just right and was carrying enough speed at the moment I had both reached the car in front and there was room to overtake, and going round corners with one wheel in the air.
In a fast car with modern driver aids it's just a bit boring really, overtakes and corners take little effort. The most exciting bit is wondering when the next wheel smashing pothole will appear.
