If it wasn't Partygate it would have been something else; Boris is a habitual, compulsive liar and also believes he is exempt from the rules and processes that apply to everyone else. His being found guilty of misleading Parliament was an inevitability. So no conspiracy, just a deeply flawed character following a pre-destined course.Screwdriver wrote: ↑Sat Jun 17, 2023 12:10 pm Personally I am a fan of Boris and I think this "party gate" bollocks was just that: an excuse to get rid of a very popular figure.
To what end I wonder? To try and install that WEF puppet Sunak? To continue the move back into the EU and reverse Brexit? Who is driving this process?

And that 'shitrag' is the second best selling news paper in the UK, next to the Metro which is free. That suggests that the other papers are shitrags and that those who don't like it are in a minority.

It may be one of the best selling rags in the UK. But it also contained some huge whoppers about Brexit, the EU pre Brexit and pretty much any other subject you fancy. I'd guess The Sun is the best seller and I would say exactly the same about that one too. The commentary in those and other papers were a big reason in my no longer wanting to live in the UK - if they are best sellers, then the mentality of the general public is suspect. And that saddens me.
Also, best selling does not always equate to 'excellent' or even 'good'!

Like I say, it just means you don't agree with it, where others (the majority) do. That is exactly the beauty of a democracy. We do not live in communist China, we live in a place where we have choice.
If you want to talk mentality, just look at those who support hate for these papers and those who love the Guardian for example - they have some questionable mentalities.

You're wasting your time, Nogs. Ant defends Johnson on the ground that 'he's minted' and the Daily Fail on the grounds that it's the second best selling paper in the UK. You can't reason with that kind of mentality.

TBF, it didn't feel like 'choice' was an option where I was living. The pressure to conform to the 'values' of the 'rags' and the more strident racists was pretty horrific.Ant wrote: ↑Sat Jun 17, 2023 12:54 pmI wouldn't base where I live on news paper popularity But top marks for leaving, rather than throwing paint at those who have a different opinion.Noggin wrote: ↑Sat Jun 17, 2023 12:50 pmIt may be one of the best selling rags in the UK. I do realised that not all of the UK is the same, but this was an area I'd lived in or near all my life. And various friends in a number of other areas of the UK behaved the same way and were vitriolic if I voiced my different opinion.
Ok, I'm sure some of France is similar, but I chose to live somewhere that not only feels, but IS very remote from most of those sorts of things.
The problem that I saw was that too many people believed everything that was written in those best selling papers and those that didn't HAD to change their view and Conform or they were to be browbeaten into sharing the view.
THAT is why I dislike them and the people that extol their views. I wasn't allowed a different opinion over there, and whilst I had always planned to live here, I hadn't planned to cut ties as far as I have. That choice was made due to the brow beating and abuse I received from people I had believed were friends for anything from 5-25 years. If we are no longer allowed to have a different opinion, then whats the point of living there?

We've all seen certain groups of people turn vitriolic, people change. There are many people who I've witnessed turn nasty because some people do not have the same opinion.
There are a lot of things written in those papers which is true and of genuine concern to people, especially those of us with children. There is a core of people for whom it doesn't affect, so they really couldn't care less, so it's easier for them to brush it off as something they don't like.Noggin wrote: ↑Sat Jun 17, 2023 1:00 pm Ok, I'm sure some of France is similar, but I chose to live somewhere that not only feels, but IS very remote from most of those sorts of things.

Anyone that thinks a newspaper's popularity is a guide to content quality and accuracy needs to complete the following expression:

No, but that means you don't value the content, the point I'm making is that if it's a small community who don't like it.....well what do you do?Count Steer wrote: ↑Sat Jun 17, 2023 1:15 pm Anyone that thinks a newspaper's popularity is a guide to content quality and accuracy needs to complete the following expression:

Buy another paper? Carry on spouting hate about those who have a genuine concern which papers like the Mail WILL talk about whilst those who aren't bringing kids up into this and who don't even know which gender they are today couldn't care less about?

I subscribe to The Spectator. It's anti-lockdown, anti-woke etc etc. (Johnson was editor once upon a time and it's owned, for now, by the remaining scumbag Barclay brother). I disagree with 80% of it and find myself pleasantly surprised sometimes when I think 'Oh, that's an angle I haven't thought about'. I sometimes even think 'well said' .The content is well written and well argued (with the main exception of Lionel Shriver who has been submitting the same re-jigged article for weeks now + Taki who is just a complete turd).Ant wrote: ↑Sat Jun 17, 2023 1:17 pmNo, but that means you don't value the content, the point I'm making is that if it's a small community who don't like it.....well what do you do?Count Steer wrote: ↑Sat Jun 17, 2023 1:15 pm Anyone that thinks a newspaper's popularity is a guide to content quality and accuracy needs to complete the following expression:

The key thing is it makes me think. I quite enjoy that. Tabloids just tell/manipulate people into what to think and/or feed their prejudices. (The Mirror is supposed to be left and it's just as execrable as the Mail and the Sun).
For balance I get Private Eye.

Re: Here we go again...
I saw and heard a LOT (not talking about here, IRL). I expressed it at the time. Old news but it was sad as it came from intelligent people I counted as friends. If you have an opinion and can discuss it, great. Don't expect me to change mine without discussion (not abuse) and I will give the same curtesy. (A family member got pissy because I didn't agree and came out with the amazing line of "let me explain again so that you understand, because if you understood, you would agree with me" - no - I totally understood the comment, I just didn't agree!)
That's the bit I dislike the most. Discussion, good - abuse because people disagree, bad
I always bought the Mail. But I didn't believe all the scare stories or hyped stories. I suppose I looked for the background to balance the headlines. And their crossword was one I could do and the TV pages were good for me!!Ant wrote: ↑Sat Jun 17, 2023 1:05 pmThere are a lot of things written in those papers which is true and of genuine concern to people, especially those of us with children. And I am certain not everything in those papers is lies. My issue is that the lies are whoppers and hyped up and aimed to get the general public hyped up too. I know from reading one of them that some content is great and useful and yes, it affects various groups more than others. I just dislike the way they intend to hype up a reaction on something that doesn't warrant that level of reaction

It's also the reason that I do read threads that on my bad days I avoid.
I read the comments to see if maybe I can learn something. Or at least research a bit to be sure I feel happy with what I think!! I live an incredibly solitary life and so I miss proper discussion on bigger topics, it's handy to have somewhere to choose to go and read stuff and find out different views - sometimes!! LOL

Boris is guilty of rule breaking, which he's pretty much got away with, and was always going to given the number of collaborators. And guilty of fibbing about it, which he might also have got away with had he not made so many enemies. His friends fell away in droves only leaving the stalwart planks in government and of the public to continue singing his praises. You can't build a government around Dorries and ReesMogg, that's where it was heading.

Re: Here we go again...
I love this sort of rhetoric. Boris gets booted out of office by nefarious means and people hesitate to face the truth which is that he was ousted on a technicality.
We did not expect the entire government to shut down in the middle of a pandemic did we? The whole thing was a mismanaged shit show due to the vagaries of censorship, fake science and a money minded asset management firm masquerading as a pharmaceutical company. That is, a global shit show. Other than a bare handful of nations who were able to ignore the money grabbing enforced inoculation.
Sweden springs to mind, the rape capital of Europe did well (except for the rape) but otherwise rather chillingly, it's the dictatorships/communist countries which can easily mange situations like this. So if we lived in an authoritarian country like South Korea, we'd be better off...
Track and trace anyone?
Anyhow, we needed an operating government and they needed to be in the office. During that period, there were meetings of more than one person, less than 2m apart (ffs). Someone nabbed a picture of Boris with a bottle and he was fucked. Doesn't matter what the truth is, the BBC would put on some poor fucker who lost his mum, dad, all his siblings then died horribly without even being able to visit himself in hospital etc. Then Cue endless Pictures of a single incident involving Boris and the infamous bottle.
It is the worst kind of political shenanigans which landed us a useless standby PM and an equally useless unelectable toad, Sunak, selected effectively by the WEF.
Boris was PM because he was and is POPULAR. Other than the obvious problem with Labour being a shower of cunts and Lib Dims being even worse, the entire political system is the same on all sides and a bit of a sham. It hardly matters which party is in power these days since most of the policies are specifically designed to support global corporate interests.
So I'd much rather watch Boris bumble about while the powers that be get ever richer than I would watch an obvious WEF puppet like Sunak or (god forbid!) Starmer hold the reins while the powers that be get ever richer. At least he's funny.

Oh yeah. The rhetoric. So you don't have to wade through that bumf, could people please stop saying "lies all the time" and "sacked for lying" and point to some factual incident?
The "partygate" affair would be a good place to start. We can pick apart all of the outrageous lies from the left wing propaganda machine and see what shed of truth their may be.
