Re: Recommend tyre changing tools
Warm tyres are indeed the key to successfully changing them. In summer obviously they just get to sunbather for a while, but if I have to change them in winter, then the wheel comes in overnight and stands next to the radiator with the new tyre next to another radiator, much to my Wife's chagrin I might add!

I naively/stubbornly/arrogantly thought temp can't make *that* much of a difference. How wrong I was. I've now bought a second-hand pair of tyre warmers on eBay.Taipan wrote: ↑Tue Feb 28, 2023 1:19 pm Warm tyres are indeed the key to successfully changing them. Must admit I thought the same and never tried warming tyres first, I’ve just ordered a new pair for my Tenere might give it a go if the local bike workshop is too busy to fit them.Beancounter wrote: ↑Tue Feb 28, 2023 2:50 pmI naively/stubbornly/arrogantly thought temp can't make *that* much of a difference. Never had a problem with tubeless tyres but inner tubes add a whole world of hassle using just levers, soap and knees.

I have a pathological hatred of inner tubes. The number of times I've finally wrestled the tyre back onto the rim while struggling with a tube, only to find I've nipped the bastard and I've got to do it all over again.
Unfortunately the LC runs tubed tyres...

I had to change many in my youthful racing days. There's a knack to it.mangocrazy wrote: ↑Tue Feb 28, 2023 3:50 pmI have a pathological hatred of inner tubes. In fairness the last time I did them I managed to fit both without nipping either. The Sealey tyre changer I now have probably helped a lot.

One of the secrets was to only put the lever in less than an inch. Less likely to pinch tube.mangocrazy wrote: ↑Tue Feb 28, 2023 3:58 pmYeah - one I don't appear to have...Yorick wrote: ↑Tue Feb 28, 2023 3:52 pmI had to change many in my youthful racing days. One day at Carnaby I was fitting a tyre for a mate. I looked up and about 5 lads were stood there with tyres and wheels looking hopefully.
I changed them all no probs. £2 each.
Was cool in 1982. Paid for half my race entry for the day.

Yes, that makes a lot of sense. I also seem to remember that slightly inflating the tube (but not too much) also lessened the chances of nipping the tube.
You could probably add a zero to that price and still have takers today...

Hydraulic car Jack, couple of bits of wood, job jobbed.
Just fitted a pair on the xsr.
As with most things in life, there's a knack. Once you have it, it's a piece of piss

I had to buy a 8inch G clamp the other day, just to break the bead on a tubeless. Earlier I broke a trigger clamp, tried rolling over it with the Yaris, bastard thing was well and truly on there even after sitting in the sun all day and liberally sprayed with soapy water.
