Intercom Question??

Post by Yorick »

We have a decent intercom when riding the enduro bikes, so fancy one for the GSXR.

I have a system now that lets me play music from my phone and tells me the phone's map instructions.

Is there a system where we can both listen to our own phones and also communicate with each other?

You want something with mesh (for the chatting) and bluetooth (for the toonz & directions), if you go bluetooth only you'll end up both listening to one phone.

Cardo get my vote, a wee bit spendy, but totes head & shoulders above the Sena I used to have

Another vote for Cardo. I've got the Packtalk Slim, less wind noise than with the bulkier ones.

It does everything you mention.

We have Cardo PackTalk stuff (the 'Bold' iirc) and it does all that, works very well, as long as you take time to get everything setup right (mics, earpieces etc)

Each unit is an independant Bluetooth 'headset' for the phone it's connected to (so music, calls, sat-nav directions etc are all individual), but then the Cardo units talk to each other when 'joined' over radio signals, and obviously you can expand the 'group'. IIRC with the 'Mesh' system the group can be quite large numbers, and each unit connects to the nearest one - so if you've got riders strung out over several miles, as long as each unit can see at least one other then the messages can work their way down the 'network' instead of requiring line-of-sight for the person in the lead to talk to the person at the tail. I also think that you 'can' set it up so that the 'group' can listen to a phone call, or share music - but haven't looked into how you'd do that because it's not something we would use.

Oh - and this is all done with 'just' the small unit that clips to the helmet, unlike the old AutoCom systems that needed a separate radio fixed to the bike.

Worth noting as well that with some of the Cardo units, the electronic bits are in a separate component to the helmet/mic component so what you could do is buy a pair of systems, and fit them to the off-road helmets (eg mounting kit with boom-mics) , then buy extra helmet mountings (eg kit without boom mics) for the on-road helmets and just use the same electronic units on both sets of helmets. Be a lot cheaper than having 2 complete sets of kit.

I have the Freecom 2 for me and the missus, no mesh as such but when we want to talk a button switches it on, then when its back to music it another button.

I had an old Freecom single unit which got broken but the mount and speakers still work ok so my tour x4 has one base set fitted and my Shoei has the other one fitted and i just swap the small unit between the mounts depending on which helmet i am using

The Sena units allow intercom whilst still allowing each user to listen to their own music (thankfully)

The Cardo units do the same so the missus doesn’t have to listen to my Prodigy albums among others

I imagine they all do that tbh, it's a pretty basic requirement and would be expected now.

Gremlinette turns the whole thing off and listens via her Apple ear buds, save listening to me.
