Was riding the GSXR today in just flip flops and thinking it's no probs as just leave it in 3rd so no gear changing.

Then just wondered. Seeing as it pulls away effortlessly in 3rd, how about starting off in top?

Blimey. Was so easy. Slipped clutch for a few seconds and let it out fully at 15 MPH, and it was off
Was quite impressed.

Zero to 180+ in same gear


Last bike I did it on was my GT750 in late 70s

No chance of a twin doing that! Guess most modern bikes have a good chance though

I just tried it on a bicycle, also wearing flip flops. It worked fine although I'm a bit worn out now. Didn't even need to slip the clutch!

My Zed is very short geared,so pulls from nothing in 6th. It has made me very lazy.

I think the K1200R might have been able to do that, not sure i ever tried though.

It was able to run along at walking pace, and up moderate inclines just on tickover, in first natch.

When I first got the Bonnie it ran like shite and the gearbox selection was er....unclear. It also has a close ratio box and the selector mechanism is on the right.

I pulled off in all four gears at various times, struggled to tell which I was actually in or whether I really was changing half the time

She'll still pull off in 4th now though I reckon. Only revs to ~7000rpm though. Rolls along at idle in 1st at about 10-15mph.

Yes mine can. I know this as in a US review of the GSXS the bloke was saying how you could pull away in 3rd it was so torquey, he then thought fuck it and went with 5th no issues so then tried 6th again pulling it off fine.

Like Skub though, mine won't do 180. Think top end is 150ish.

I used to use 3rd on the VFR as an automatic, good for 0mph up to about 100. Most bikes will take off ok in higher gears, just needs decent clutch control. Even my CB500 will pull away in 3rd.

My g650gs could maybe do 0-180km/h with a (strong) tailwind.
In 5th though, it doesn't have a 6th.

The Multi 1200 twin, not a chance I think and top speed is only around the 145-150 mark anyway due to the engine tuning

Hornet and XJ6 both manage top gear pull aways easily.

Years ago I was running a DAS course when someone complained that the ER5 he was learning on was too lumpy in 1st gear to do a U-turn. He'd been bitching about the bike all day. It wasn't the best or nicest bike, I agree but I got on it, put it in 6th and did the U-turn in front of him. Then did another one and parked it back in front of him.

After that he shut up and got on with learning.

Just for a giggle, I just did it 2 up

I told the missus what I was gonna do. Then told her to count and I'd shut off at 100mph.

I counted 10. She counted 9.

Not bad. 0 - 100 mph in 9 seconds starting off in 6th

If you've not ridden a litre monster sports bike, it's hard to imagine the oomph and low down grunt

Cue the nurds quoting leccy stuff.
