I can't go round corners anymore?

Post by Taipan »

I've noticed that I no longer lean into corners anymore? :wtf: Seriously, I blat towards them then go around at a normal speed with hardly any lean and a country mile of getting a peg down. Its not like i was ever quick or a destroyer of tyres, but I'd often feel my boot or peg touch down on the same roads I'm riding today, but not anymore? Strange? :eh:

I don't know when this started or when I stopped doing it? Maybe subconsciously I'm worried, as busting up a mechanical knee wont end well I suppose? Maybe just encroaching gifferdom? Or is it just the older I get, the faster I was syndrome kicking in...

I managed to scrape my boot going round a roundabout the other day and nearly had a heart attack. I now specialise in noisy overtakes and making sure I have the widest chicken strips possible. I'm now the person I used to look at in my MUCH younger days and think "that bikes wasted on him". And I'd tell my younger self that it's all paid for and my insurance is about a 1/5 of yours.😂

Lucky you, I've never had my knee down. It's about a foot away from the ground. Still rocking the chicken strips.

I've gone from no chicken strips on the 690 Duke to MASSIVE fuckers on the GSXS. Not sure if I've turned into a fanny in the last year or not used to the more normal handling/weight of the Suzuki vs the odd handling, low weight of the Duke. Doesn't help that there are so many potholes, shit roads.

Our roads’ shit state :angry-cussingblack: has made the biggest difference to my riding in the last few years. On rural roads, it’s like riding a pogo stick (and downright dangerous at night).

Only time I ever got my knee down was followed by my arse and my elbow and not in a good way!!

But, I had virtually no chicken strips on any of the bikes :bblonde:

Too much horse riding as a youngster, I was used to holding on with my knees    :1 :1

However, I do notice I'm less good in one direction than the other now. Not sure if that's because I'm worried about the shoulder or if it just doesn't move enough to allow the same movement!
Life is for living. Buy the shoes. Eat the cake. Ride the bikes. Just, ride the bikes!! :bblonde:

Counter steering does it for me. I don't lean as much as push my way around corners. Surprisingly effective.

The important thing here is, are you making it round the corner? If you are (which you are) then who cares, but if you want to improve then posting pics of being on track and rear tyres ain’t going to help at all, it’ll do sweet FA.

You either need to get on track so you can explore safely or watch some videos on YouTube and take onboard as much as possible some ideas that might help.

Counter steering etc will and can help, lots of people do it subconsciously, others learn it and then do it subconsciously but in my experience lean angle boils down to two things, body position and speed. Fact is if you aren’t going fast enough then you won’t get the lean angle you desire, but it boggles my mind that someone will want more lean angle for the given speed that they are going. So I’m going to assume you aren’t riding fast enough into and round the corners.

Like Yoricks first pic you can see he’s got the body to the inside of the corner and is carrying less lean angle, bikes almost upright, he could probably carry more speed at this point and get the bike cranked over some more, the second picture his body is more central to the bike, not hanging off as much and you can see the lean angle in the bike, if he was more to the inside the bike could be a few degrees more upright allowing him to either be faster at this point and safer or maintain the speed he’s going with less lean angle.

Another key component to all this is being relaxed, if you’re too rigid you’ll make an arse of it, stay relaxed, be able to move around freely, enjoy the bike, don’t worry about anything.

Perhaps you’re riding with due care and attention and consideration for other road users.
