Despite buying a brand new RD500LC when they first came out, I was never a great fan of its looks. I much preferred the RG500 looks wise. Neither of them appeal to me currently and my RG500 into MV Augusta F4 project is still sitting there waiting for me to finish it off...

The xsr base bike is too tall and high at the front. Putting bodywork on it makes it look stupid. Is that a round headlight too ?

I disagree about the front height, the gen 2 (that bike) is a good 30mm lower than the gen1. They're tiny bikes.
And the RD was rubbish compared to...........?
Love the effort Hag has put into these.

The RD500 wasn't a great bike, it was heavy and made about 70bhp at most, the 350YPVS was a better bike and by spending £100 it could be made as fast as the 500.
A standard RG500 isn't super quick either, maybe 75bhp, but taking the exhausts off and removing the ridge of weld gave them 90-95, then either the primary gears or second gear let go.

Of the 3 race reps available in 1984, it sat neatly in the middle ground, quicker than the Honda, handled a bit better than the rg.
Its biggest problem was its upstart sibling, which with ( I think a bit more than £100) money spent on it could keep them in sight, until it inevitably went pop.
Having ridden all 3 2t reps, the rg was barking, in a straight line, the ns handled properly and the rd didnt excel anywhere except for the price of replacement pipes!

RG500 and NS400 were both 1985, RD was 1984, tuned YPVS 350s don't go pop if you put them together properly, my one was as fast as a 500LC, Stan Stephens stage 2 tune, £80 in 1990, I think I paid the same for a second hand set of Lomas pipes. In 1984 you could buy a new 350 YPVS from Stan Stephens that was already proddie tuned for about £1500, which was the same as they were most dealers for a standard bike. I thinky Couchy bought one, I couldn't afford one.
A mate bought a new NS400 in 85, Honda gave him his money back because it seized so many times.
I know someone who bought one in 87 that he still owns, it's a lot better and has never given any trouble.
A mate has two RG500s, both with shagged primary drives, he's waiting for someone to make some replacements.
And for any die hard RD500 fans, there's an ex Steve Parrish Harris framed one for sale in Sweden for £11K

The RD500s did very well on track in 500cc proddy class.
They were also in the F1 class and did go well when properly breathed upon

The fairing could be shortened / lowered significantly is the standard bars were replaced with something lower, and the headlight was changed to something that fitted.
