Another Whyte - the G170s

I bought this yesterday - a 2018 G170. It’s pretty nice really, the frame isn’t scratched to pieces, the wheels are straight and the suspension works nicely. The dropper is getting a bit stuck at the top of its travel though, hopefully just a cable tension thing but we’ll see.

It’s been sat for nearly a year, so I’ve started going over it making sure there’s grease in the right places.

The pads were ok, but didn’t have much bite so I swapped them out with some superstar Kevlar at the front and nukeproof sintered at the rear.

I’ve only ridden it to check the gears and bed the brakes in, but it feels lighter than my T130 and feels fast too, though that’s probably tyres. The seller threw in a brand new dhr 2 so that’ll go on soon too.

That’s 3 whytes in the garage now, n+1 is going well!

Cheers, I was all set to get a Bird Aeris, but pulled out because I just didn’t like it as much as this one. Not sure why but never mind.

Got to get some grips today and maybe some pedals, the ones that came with the bike are chunky spds and I want some flats.

Typical! Cheers anyway - I didn’t even consider I might need grips but these are pretty worn and quite sticky which isn’t too bad pleasant.

Sticky dropper post was nice and easy to fix…it just needed more pressure in it, so pumped it up to 250psi and now it’s perfect.

Got some nice bright orange grips from the lbs which have replaced the manky old ones.

The dhr2 is going on the front later and I’ll move the high roller to the rear.

Well, so far so good. I got to work without anything creaking, cracking or falling off. It's a proper nice ride, it doesn't feel big or wallowy, if anything it feels a bit more responsive than the T130. Looking forward to seeing how it plays at Twisted this weekend.

It's got the dhr on the front now, and I moved the high roller to the rear. Removing the previous rear was a mission though - the inner tube had stuck itself to the tyre! When I did finally get the tyre off, the rims were nice and clean and the tape looks really fresh. I'm presuming the previous owner had some posher wheels and these have been put back on for sale.

Probably going to need an rrp guard for the rear I think.

Had a nice day out at Twisted Oaks on Sunday, the bike was brilliant - I don't know what it is but I feel much more comfortable jumping, landing, turning - basically everything on this bike compared to the T130.

I managed a fair few consistent runs clearing every jump on their table jump line, and did a table with a gap in the middle that I've not had the guts for up until now. We also did the 'Moobs' jump/drops which look easy from the bottom, but the landing on the first one is pretty steep. All good really, and ready to go back to do some more.

My normal riding mate had a dodgy brake caliper and spent the day on my T130, he loved it and was super fast from the start. Had my brother in law come along too - on a carbon xc bike with 26 wheels and no dropper - he did everything we did, but I get the feeling he'll be going shopping soon.

I got some nice new bright orange pedals to match the bright orange grips...and fitted some new jockey wheels as the bearings in the old ones were knackered.

Will be back off to twisted on Monday to try a few more new things.

I seem to have a sticky rear brake, at least when it gets hot. Google says it’s a common problem on older guide r with a plastic piston.

Is it worth replacing with a metal one, or just better to buy a new brake, some of the sram models are pretty cheap at the moment.

In other news, the bike is still awesome and I’ve managed a few more features at twisted that I’d not attempted before. I was going to try the whale tail but my mate had a go first and went otb so that can wait for another day!

Well the job is somewhat fiddly but far from impossible. It does cure the issue. I've done 4-5 I think now.

My lad is loving his new Code RSC from chain reaction which were £109 each

Sounds like fun… I’m already anticipating playing hunt the circlip!

I’m usually ok at bleeding the sram brakes, there’s usually a bit of brake fluid wasted but the lever ends up ok!
