Glove controversy

Post by Hot_Air »

Don’t blame me. Spin for resurrected this controversy: wearing waterproof gloves over our sleeves :o
The Spin Doctor wrote: Sun Apr 30, 2023 5:25 pm There's always a debate about whether gloves should go under a sleeve or over. For example, the Bennetts social site says: "you really should wear your gloves UNDER the sleeves in the rain. Water will run down your arms in bad weather, which will then soak into the lining and leave you with very wet hands". Well, it depends.
It transpires @The Spin Doctor shares my dirty little secret. But don’t tell anybody!

Which means the water goes up the glove and into the arm of your jacket at speed :)

If you have bars high enough that your forearms are flat, water doesn't run 'down your arm' - it's blown the other way.

It's a skill man. I pumped in 17k in 2 'Summer' years by being an astute weather watcher.

I always end up with sodden gloves as i wear them over the sleeves. At speed I guess that would work, but as I'm mostly pottering around town I think will try the glove under/sleeve over method.

When I commuted on my Blade, I rode so fast that the air friction boiled off the rain drops I didn't dodge.

Depends on the height of the bars too. If low bars, you probably wouldn't want any chance of water running into your gloves :)

Of course, the real answer isn't under or over. It's 'buy gloves, or a jacket, with storm cuffs'.

i.e. Either:
Double cuff on gloves, jacket cuff goes in between
Or:
Double cuff on jacket, glove goes in between

Great theory, but cuffs are rarely suitable. Plus, doing them up can often be difficult, if not near impossible.

Ewwwww riding in the rain.

But when I did ride in the rain and snow I had jackets with an inner cuff, so glove went under the sleeve but over the cuff, now I'm a fully paid up FWB under the cuff is the right answer for a bit of airflow

When I rode in the rain and needed stupid great gauntlets, I was still an over. If you wear them under you're likely to be an M&S-jeans kind of guy.

I reckon i am getting soaked tomorrow in the forecast showers riding up to Yorkshire to start a ride down for a camping/bike weekend in wales with some of the old VD lot. (Abel/Mac/KHH and Beanie of this place will be joining us)

It will be Goretex gloves under the sleeves of the Goretex jacket most definitely ;)

I never wear gloves with a cuff, don't own a pair of cuffed gloves. I haven't in all the years I've been riding bikes in work either.

Don't work have to provide CE gloves? IIRC they have to have cuff & retention to get CE.

@Hot_Air @The Spin Doctor can you confirm?

@Horse It appears some police riders are supplied with these short-but-protective gloves: https://www.motolegends.com/sale/police ... black.html

However, @Nordboy knows far more than me about it.
