Of the boxer engined beemers,I had an R90S,it was a pleasant old thing to ride if you didn't expect too much from a 70s bike. I had a run on a mate's GS adv whateverthefuck a while back and hated it entirely. Couldn't wait to get off and give it back to him. Ugly and shit.

No, I rode an R1200GS in 2002 after the owner slipped on gravel and it broke his leg, I wasn't impressed, a heavy two wheeled tractor with the gearbox from a combine harvester.

I haven't but I would. I've come close with a R100GS, an R1150GSA and a R1200GSA. I've had an R80RT and an R100R in the past so have some idea what I'd be getting myself into.
They're not cheap and I don't have a garage at the moment so I can't see me getting one soon.

I would add I've had a Caponord and V-Strom 1000. Both shitter than a GS in their own way. But cheaper too, like me.

I had a Varadero, it was very underrated, imho. I really liked it.
My current GS is a 2016, so no 'shift cam' or colour display, but everything else the current 1200GS has.
It's more bike than you could ever need.

I'm sure they are great bikes and there's a reason why they are so popular. But they just aren't for me, just too big and not my thing.

I had a few boxer twins when I was a young courier as they did the job nicely.
After that I went to sports bikes for probably 20 years then was riding like a twat everywhere and was either going to make a big hole in a hedge or get nicked at a stupid speed so traded in the zx636 for an R1150GS after seeing a few others like Abel and Animal on them blasting along and looking comfortable at lots of mph but without absolute top end speed
Loved it as it soaked up the local shitty roads like a dream enough to leave a couple of blokes on Fireblades behind as their eyeballs were rattling and top speed was slow enough to bring down my chances of above consequences. The telelever front end allows you to take the piss trail braking into corners and you only need about 3 of the gears most of the time
I test rode one of the newer liquid cooled 1200GS bikes but went Ducati Multistrada instead as the BMW dealer lied to me about warranty claims and the Multi had more sports bike dna in an upright chassis with a local dealer I trusted more. If it hadn’t been for that I might have had another couple of GS’s

Yes, a much modified R100GS bought as a non runner. A lovely bike, it got sold once I'd got it to a tolerable state but before I'd sorted the carburation. Bing carbs and a very non standard exhaust meant it would be expensive and ultimately futile to start trying.

A (yellow) 2003 R1150GS - and if I could have one bike back it would be that one. (If I could have two of them back I'd have the K1200GT as well).
Had an F800GS...which I didn't like at all.
(Also had an R1200ST which was fine but, perversely I preferred the 1150 engine. I tried both R1150 and R1200 RTs and preferred the 1150 too)

I've got a 13MY, first of the water cooled. Yep, they're a big lump alright, backing out of the garage and turning on the drive takes a bit of care but nowt scary, turning circle is very good, better than the mt09.
50 odd mpg, very, very comfortable on front and back seat. Motor goes well enough with a pleasant sound. Probably carries as much luggage as my car (yaris). Decent rain protection, not as good as yaris.
It's a good multipurpose bike and one for the garage but you do need something a bit better looking along side it, oh and lighter.

Nearest I've came was an R1150R Rockster, one of the few bikes I regret selling along with my 5VY R1 and RSV1000R Factory.
First impressions I hated it but within a few miles really bonded with it, only a relationship breakdown and house move forced its sale. If I could find another at a reasonable price I'd grab one.....
