Harley Davidson

Post by Docca »

Anyone have one? Interested in running costs ( not fuel, but maintenance etc- for someone else to do it! 😀)

What’s your favourite style?

I’ve landed a bit of folding and am seriously looking at bobbers again. I don’t think Sledhead are trading anymore?

Thanks!

Indian FTR, it's like half Harley, half proper bike.

From what i know of them, they're no worse than anything else in terms of running costs. Neighbour still has his street bob and rarely has to do anything to it. It's needed nothing more than generic servicing and he's owned it since the lad was first born.

It's not the servicing costs which will get ya, it's the unending stream of modifications :D Just look at Mrlongbeard's thread.

Buy one if you want one and can afford it, worrying about running costs and reliability is for dull people.

Slow, noisy, corrode at the first hint of moisture and the build quality would put CZ to shame. Plus you need to get AF tools to work on the things, but you probably have them for your defender. Parts prices are ludicrous.

But......

They have a certain charm that makes you forgive the bad stuff, non bike people will walk past an R1 but will stop to look at a HD. Nice day, chugging along at 60 in an open face and shades, it doesn't get much better.

No real idea as I do my own spannering, but an indy quotes https://www.northantsvtwin.co.uk/workshop-services/ and HD's own service plans are costed; https://www.edinburghharley-davidson.co ... vice-plans

Get a few test rides, they're pretty happy to let anyone out on one (even muppets like me).

If you do, report back on your thoughts.

I occasionally think that something like this might be quite fun to chug about on...

However I can't stand the shouty pipe look at me vibe. If it was relatively quiet it would be quite relaxing I guess.

Main dealers are expensive for everything as the bikes are owned by a lot of well-off people and well-off people like to be seen to be able to afford to spend more than the proles! :D Loads of good Indys out there though.

If you're going to get one you'll need a new mindset to go with it. Think America. Big long straight roads or long straight main streets for showing off down. They don't have much ground clearance so forget going out "canyon carving". A lot of American Harley owners have their other bikes for that and they seem to be able to separate the styles and purpose whereas, inexplicably, we can't. :hmmm:

They have the most distinctive exhaust of any bike and you'll know what you're riding and so will everyone else. All non bikers oooh and ahh at them and say things like wow, nice Harley. Owning a Harley is a great experience, but only if you can change your mindset as above. I rode with several Harleys down to Southend seafront and there is nothing like riding in a pack of loud Harleys. People came up and had their photos taken with the row of bikes. I've never experienced anything like it before, during or since owning one.

Read my second paragraph a few times and let it sink in, then go out and buy a Breakout or suchlike and enjoy, cos i bet you will!! 8-)

I always park uphill, so can drive off. Not fart about pulling it uphill backwards.

I park in the direction I'm gonna leave, who has time to worry about it being up or downhill

Aha. I was thinking about car parks where folk ride in and park downhill.

I'm not sure which one of you is using a euphemism for bumming, could be both of you.
