I've seen comments from several ex PMs who say it's one of the most useful meetings they have all week. A chance to speak to someone who definitely doesn't want their job, who won't ever leak what was said and who understands international diplomacy to a high degree.
How many fleas does the monarch drop in the PM's ear though? Who knows.
I'm not even against the idea of an unelected but interested (and informed) party holding some sway if I'm honest. Might actually lead to some >5 year thinking!

Apparently, she is always very tactful in dealing with them - but hated Tony Blair over making Diana "the Queen of Hearts" - and that most hated status was only usurped by Boris - who she detested

The problem is, he actually believes it. He's convinced that "well, if i can make it, anyone can" and i guess to an extent that's plausible, but not anywhere near quite as simplistic as he makes out.Treadeager wrote: ↑Tue May 02, 2023 12:54 pm Thank you for that contribution Potter

He thinks with enough work, effort and determination a bloke can go from lifting bins to owning a fleet of their new wagons.... I'm less convinced.

Re: Not My King / God save The King
The thing about that is that when the bloke has his fleet of new wagons, he needs people who lift the bins, who, if they work hard enough....own a fleet of wagons.... You actually need more people who, if you pay them right are happy lifting the bins, than you do bin fleet owners. (I suppose you could set up a cooperative where the binnies own the fleet but there aren't many examples to study).weeksy wrote: ↑Tue May 02, 2023 1:09 pmThe problem is, he actually believes it. What actually seems to happen is the shitification of business, when the fleet owner can't charge customers more because there are competing bin fleet owners so he/she puts the squeeze on the labour, so you end up with rich, stressed owners and a constantly changing workforce of underpaid, overworked, unhappy bin lifters. (Who decide not to work for a bin fleet owner any more and go and become Amazon/Sainsbury/Evri/DPD drivers (or possibly ).

Most grab barely enough (or even less than enough) for that month and then go off to do something else more important to them.
I believe I may even be proof of that. I am not "obsessed" with money, I made the mistake of assuming hard work and good ideas would just bring reward. So after achieving some considerable success in gainful employment, I left to start a number of business enterprises which I thought the world would want and I could easily achieve.
I created an online video advertising company which would generate snippets of video content (which the advertiser paid for), years before YouTube was formed. A business consultant took the idea, sold it, kept the money (and a ton of interesting URLs I had acquired, pre 2000).
Before eBay became the giant it is now, I started an online retail operation by teaching myself MySQL, generating web content on the fly, integrating it with new payment mechanisms (before PayPal became commonplace). I worked with one other chap who "managed" the money side and when it started rolling in, simply fucked off with all of it.
I helped an artist friend of mine develop a mass market process for his workflow which had enormous potential for scaling up. He brought in a business consultant but this time I was wary and we formed a company so they couldn't steal it. The business chap stole the ideas, all the IP, started a new company with my (former) friend and they kicked me out.
Anyhow, I have several more examples of the exact same scenario but frankly, they will just make me look even more of a mug. My point is that it is really not that easy to make money out of thin air and even if you do find the means, not that easy to stop anyone simply taking it off you.
Those were the best, most productive years of my life, from which, like those I worked with I should have walked away with £££'s. I think I either burned out, the stress got to me or this blasted brain disease has eaten up all of my chutzpah.
Either way, I couldn't do it any more and suddenly here I am, an old man. Penniless. That doesn't hugely worry me but it speaks to the idea that we could all work harder to achieve success, most of which I sincerely believe relies on luck and if I didn't have bad luck I'd have no luck at all...

Re: Not My King / God save The King
How rich do you need to be?
I have stuff, I own a house, my kids have turned out ok. That's probably better than the majority of my forebears. I could've worked harder, longer, (definitely smarter) and given myself a bigger safety net I suppose - that's what most of us are bothered about.
Prince/King Charlie's life is a fookin balls-up, if looked at objectively, if he was a mate you would think he was a terrible arse. But then he's had a life of privilege and is getting crowned next week, so I doubt he's too bothered.

She was a nice lady. Well liked.
She was there everyday of our lives.
Like a nice grandma.
Folk just liked her. Didn't really think about the family.
It changed recently. Doubt it will be the same again.
She was however a nice lady and well liked, and I share your doubt that any new monarch will have the same respect

I very much doubt it's a measure of the 'average' UK person.
IIRC anyone earning something like 35K (give or take) is actually in the top third, or quarter of 'high earners' compared to the UK population as a whole. Given that we don't have many self-confessed benefits layabouts (retirees apart ) on here, I'd guess that the main forum demographic is in the "reasonably well-off" bracket relative to the UK as a whole, so any conclusions that anyone takes from comments on here should bear that in mind.

Nothing needs to be put in place. If the royals all died next week how would this impact the country apart from not getting so much money in from tourism?Potter wrote: ↑Mon May 01, 2023 10:07 am I'm interested in those who would wish to do away with the royals, what they would put in place, if anything?
I know "it's not a scholarly forum" but you can't just wipe them out, there is a whole load of law and historical procedure type stuff that would need to be drawn up and agreed upon, so you at least need some sort of rational plan to fill the hole.
Re: Not My King / God save The King
If we did away with the Royals, what will we call the Royal Air Force?
The British Air Force? Doesn't quite have the same ring to it though.
Trooping the Colour is a fantastic ceremonial duty too.

You don't have to invent glass ceilings...you said yourself that getting non-exec positions is a 'jobs for the boys/girls' thing. Once you're in, you're in. If you're out, you're out, unless we're talking loft conversion companies here. Obvs, royalty requires blood, or the illusion that there is royal blood in the veins.

I was 4 weeks old when George VI died so yeah, I'm one of the older lads. But, to be honest, I don't remember the days before Elizabeth got crowned.

Not coronation quiche?
No I'd never heard of it either, not until my mum asked me to buy some of the ingredients.
