Not My King / God save The King

Post by Treadeager »

Do you have a view ? I lean towards Republicanism . Am I wrong ? The rules have changed over the millennia . Victory in Combat , Primogeniture , Legitimacy , Sex , Religion and Language have all played their part . I find it fascinating from an historical point of view . The Wars of the Roses , The Rise of the Tudors , The Stewarts ( I'm sure that some of our Caledonian Friends will be along any minute to remind us that Mary , Queen of Scot's blood runs through the modern cohort , NOT the blood of Elizabeth I ) . If the Royals were abolished , would we NEED something in their place ? Is tourism REALLY a consideration in this ? What about " Established " Religion . So many questions ( no need for any conspiracy side tracks ) .

Ok so we do get a Bank Holiday on May 8th

I find it all a bit silly. The idea that you're the right person for the job because your ancestors did it. Although the job description is a bit woolly these days - tourist attraction? Tabloid fodder/soap opera? Property portfolio managers? ERII should probably have been the last.. but I don't care much either way. Barely relevant.

I was never a royalist, if I gave the royal family more than 30 seconds of my brain time in a year something was wrong, but live n let live it's not something I really gave a fig about, but now with this jug eared twat taking over along with his adulterous slut wife pisses me off.

Knock 'em all off, drop the stone of destiny on the right royal heads, turn Buck Palace into a Weatherspoons & Holiday Inn

As I understand it, the tourism benefit is quite significant financially to the country as a whole.

I'm not too fussed about the question of whether or not they're relevant any more, but i do think that politically there needs to be some sort of "long-term" point of view to balance the short-termism of the elected rabble in the Commons, and the royal family while not part of the political establishment properly, do provide a sobering influence I think.

As far as the scandals are concerned, that's mostly the media selling papers and blowing things massively out of scale.

Oh, and Harry is definitely not Charlie's son.

I struggle with it. 'Royalty' is obviously ridiculous, inheritance of power similar, 'head of the church' is off the scale.
However I don't like the idea of a republic so much. Royalty seems to be literally the only thing that distinguishes the UK from 'everyone else'. We , as a nation, are clearly not capable of (a) finding suitable candidates to represent us (b) electing the right one. So arguably Royalty is no worse. You can't argue that the late Queen was great as the public image of the country.

Ultimately it is unsustainable. Will Charles be the last monarch? It's quite possible.
Free holidays for the win though. Please keep getting married, being dead, being crowned.

Royals are born into it at least, actively wanting to be elected the twat is even worse.

First thing a President would want is a nice modern £100M+ palace, Buck House would be 'unsuitable'. And a Presidential jet of course, probably an Airbus 380. And a fleet of limos to match POTUS. And a staff of 1000, with an office to house them. As a maritime nation he/she would obviously need a yacht, and a big one too, for entertaining obviously.

I reckon £5 billion should do it, and £1 billion a year in costs.

Better the devil you know.

I am not a royalist but the alternatives to the current Head of State, such as an elected or appointed President, look worse.

Also the fact that an elected head of state would probably feel like they have to do something and interfere.

Behind the bits that us plebs usually get to see, Buck House is a bit of a time warp dump (40s-50s feel rather than anything earlier tbh). I guess the palace at Versailles isn't too impressive 'below stairs' either though.

I do like the pomp and ceremony. The Queen's funeral showed the world what the UK is best at.

Don't think any other country could have topped that.

Most other countries have 'ceremonial' soldiers. We have real soldiers who do ceremonial too, and usually better.

For me the Royal Family is a bit like Religion, you either believe in them or you don't and if you don't they'll kill ya! :wtf:

The only good thing for me is an extra bank holiday and the chance to be a bit more social with the neighbours as i think we are having some coronation party or something.

I don't much care if we have a symbolic head of state or not. Like politics,I'm largely indifferent.
