Yes, I probably could spend ages googling and finding the answer, but with the wealth of knowledge on here, why would I?

I am building a small "bench" grinder type device, but it's not just a bench grinder...

The motor will drive a pulley system which will have some diamond wheels on a shaft, but... I want to make it speed controllable, single phase, doesn't need to be hugely powerful.

Leccy motors come in numerous types, even in single phase it seems - 2 pole, 4 pole... blah blah blah.

I am building on the cheap, so a second hand motor would be ideal.

What would you guys suggest? What would be a good donor machine? Are there any "gotchas" for leccy motors I should know about? Can you fit a speed controller to any single phase motor etc?

An old e-bike may make a good donor, usually the motor is the most reliable part on them. The motors are usually powerful and will be understated in any documents, many had speed controllers with an electonic throttle but the downsides are they will expect a DC power supply and the rpm is a bit low for grinding wheels.
There are plenty of rubbish bikes with good motors attached that get chucked when the battery dies or the frame snaps etc.

For someone who knows nothing about motors, as Wratty says he is, this would seem pretty smart.

Hmm - didn't know you could get 220v 3 phase. Shows how much I know.

I have a three phase rotary inverter I run the lathe off, but I need this to be single phase.

Yeah, but... people either want stupid money or they are "broken - think the motor has burnt out" which is the only bit I want lol
