Commuter bike with a £5k budget
Commuter bike with a £5k budget
After 10 years on the tiger it's time to look for something else for everyday commuting of 20 miles each way on 50 & 60 limits, and a couple of short stretches of dual carriageway. Approx 7 - 8k miles a year.
Needs are... Upright riding position, good weather protection, top box, 100ish bhp, no more than about 15k miles on the clock, no more than 10yr old. Skinny enough for filtering.
Close to Gloucestershire
Exciting to ride doesn't really come into the equation, but having enough poke to win the TLGP is nice
Nc750 and tracers are non starters.
Last week's front runner was a BMW f650gs (the 800cc one).
This week it's a crossrunner. Has anyone owned or ridden one of these?
For sale, 2013 tiger 800xc, 63000 miles, starts every morning £5k ovno.

Re: Commuter bike with a £5k budget
For 5k, really? That could be a brilliant shout, I'm off to have a look
Edit- nope, they seem to start at £7k so out of budget

I'd cross the F800GS off. Had one. Hated it.

The problem with a naked is that I'd hate it in winter, I like a big screen to keep the worst of the weather offweeksy wrote: ↑Fri Apr 21, 2023 9:54 amMmmmm it seems not...

If it's genuinely just for commuting then a CB500S will do that job standing on it's head.
(edit - just saw the need for a screen - added the S)

Re: Commuter bike with a £5k budget
Falls flat on it's arse with the "100bhp" requirement, but if you're just commuting you should at least consider a super scoot.
Gotta be man enough to carry it off, obvs. Ask Pietin for details.

Cross Runners are dead wee and nesh, you want the Cross Tourer.
Nice low maintenance shaft, v4 1200cc, the weight of a small car, perfect.

Re: Commuter bike with a £5k budget
I should probably clarify (some people like the F800 engine).
I thought the engine in the F800GS to be the most characterless ie boring engine I've had, the ABS implementation was the worst I've experienced and the whole build felt a bit 'budget', probably because of all the weight saving they'd done compared with something like the 1150GS - which I absolutely loved.
It will do what you want so a test ride might be the thing to do. I suspect the engine won't compare very well with your Triumph though.

The BMW 800 twin lump is super vibey if you venture into the top third of the rev range.

The 100ish figure is there to say that I'm absolutely not interested in something with 25bhp or 150+bhp.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Fri Apr 21, 2023 10:07 am Falls flat on it's arse with the "100bhp" requirement, but if you're just commuting you should at least consider a super scoot.
