I'd agree that there is a want for them in communities, but maybe people want things without looking at the longer/bigger picture, at what cost?

As long as it isn't another way to force out the locally run shops, ran for years by good people, people who create and continue to help a community grow or to force more gentrification upon otherwise successful creative communities then maybe it could work, maybe!

I don't want to see plastic, fake, robot communities, that's where we start failing not just as a country, but as a race.

It wont happen. Developers get outline PP to build 200 houses, a pub, and a parade of 10 shops. They start building and 20 house in they ask for a change to delete the pub and shops ( no demand) and build an extra 50 houses. And they get the revised PP.

On the surface I can't see the issue. Move facilities to where the people are, reduce the need for some car journeys, make sure people have access to green spaces etc etc. The focus is on cities and initially the article talks about how cities will be built. TBH new build towns and cities don't float my boat (despite what Dazzle says about MK...I've been there and it's all a bit Stepford Wives). Cities tend to grow organically around a reason for them to be there...water, industry and stuff. London is, basically, a collection of '15 minute villages' squished together, but now, everyone that lives in one seems to work in another. :(

Unfortunately when planners think big they usually :angry-cussingblack: it up and think more about their 'legacy' than the poor sods that live in their big idea. Although, occasionally, a hated development turns into a 'don't you dare knock it down' place ie The Byker Wall but for every one of those there's a Park Hill.

Doesn't seem a bad idea to me.
Make it so you don't have to go too far to get the essentials.

Basically, I reckon I already live there.

Err, what was everyone's problem again?

If I'm going to walk instead of driving then I need a surrogate car boot, if the supermarket is a 15 minute walk away then I don't want daily trips.
I'll get a good sized hand cart that I can chain up outside the shop with some other hand carts, if I see Pony I might compliment the wheels on his cart.
Then because the cart is heavy when loaded I'll fit a motor, then once I have a motor it might as well carry me as well so I'll fit a seat.

Maximum 15 minutes, you're allowed to be closer. You'll probably still be allowed to have Ocado deliver too.

I think a place where the furthest house from the centre is a mile away is called a village, and most people don't want to live in villages.

The way to look at this proposal is from a standpoint of effect. What effect will this new "rule" have on your life?

For example the proposition is that this will create a situation where you won't need a car or motorcycle to do the daily chores of shopping, working, or being outdoorsy and therefore your life will be more wonderful.

The reality is that the fundamental structure of your local environment will stay the same but you simply won't be allowed to drive your car through it or ride your bike. This will be reinforced (I suggest) by further authoritarian diktats which track your every move and tot up your carbon footprint until you reach some arbitrary limit set by some faceless bureaucrat. Then you either get hit with fines and taxes until you obey or they might just switch off all of your access to all of your connected devices....

All your base are belong to us.
