Toprak to test MotoGP bike

Post by wull »

Toprak Razgatlioglu to test Yamaha’s MotoGP bike - a key clue about his future?

Image

Toprak Razgatlioglu will test Yamaha’s M1 at a private two-day test in Jerez on Monday and Tuesday this week.

The 2021 World Superbike champion, who is eyeing a spot in MotoGP, will test alongside Cal Crutchlow.

The timing comes is perhaps awkward for Yamaha who might not have expected Franco Morbidelli, their under-pressure factory rider, to be out-scoring 2021 MotoGP champion Fabio Quartararo after two rounds of the championship.

Razgatlioglu recently told Speedweek.com that he plans to secure a MotoGP seat next season: "There's nothing to announce yet, but now I have the dream of riding in MotoGP. In 2021 I was Superbike World Champion, now I'm looking at MotoGP. Why shouldn't I try it there?

"As a Yamaha rider, I have the best chance at Yamaha," added Razgatlioglu. "As of today, they have room for me in the factory team for next year. If that doesn't work, we might look at other teams.”

He is contracted to Yamaha in WSB until the end of 2023, at which point he will be an attractive free agent.

He is a key contender to partner Quartararo in 2024 in Yamaha’s factory team.

But the season has begun unexpectedly, with Morbidelli showing some of his finest form in the premier class at the opening two rounds. He will be out of contract at the end of this year.

Yamaha managing director Lin Jarvis said about Razgatlioglu testing the MotoGP bike in Jerez this weel: “Firstly, let me say it is our pleasure to be able to give Toprak another opportunity to ride the YZR-M1.

I was unable to be present at his previous test but this time I will be in Jerez to follow the testing and I will depart straight from there to attend the Grand Prix of the Americas in Austin next weekend.

“Toprak is an extraordinarily talented motorcycle racer, and I am very curious to see his speed on our Factory MotoGP machine. He will have the chance to ride alongside Cal who will be there for the ongoing development testing of our 2023 YZR-M1.”

Yamaha really should be running two teams, like all the other (non-Ducati) teams. They are shooting themselves in the foot only running one team.

So I read that Top trumps was 2s off lap record pace, on a bike he had 2 days experience with, on totally different tyres to what he races with, and Yamaha were making noises of they were expecting more from him!
Either it's a done deal and hes going to mgp so throw a smokescreen up, or Yamaha really have a problem admitting their bike isnt fit for purpose,

I read that but never noticed the bit about them expecting more. I’ve read it’s a done deal and heard other stories. With regards to the test I thought everyone was relatively happy.

Only 'thing' is that I can name on 1 finger, riders that went from wsb to motogp and did well.
I really hope he brings all that flair and talent with him.

I can think of 2 - Ben's Pies didn't do too badly and Cal actually won races.

Yeah Spies did not too bad and if it wasn’t for the injuries I’m sure he’d have continued on.

And don’t forget Troy Bayliss the only rider to ever win a WSBK race and MotoGP race in the same season.

Well, to be fair, not many have had the opportunity to.

Not on a decent bike anyway.

I'm not sure if I were Toprak I'd be in a hurry to head to Yamaha in GP

According to Lin Jarvis his focus is on retaining Frankie, so long as his resurgence continues. A decision will be made by midway through the season so that both parties have time to sort out other arrangements should they not reach an agreement.

If they don't re-sign Frankie he will be looking inside the MotoGp paddock.....

Make of that what you will, but perhaps Toprak being 2 seconds off the pace didn't blow Yamaha's socks off? Or maybe the fact they only have two bikes means they need two good riders who are proven on a MotoGP bike, and can't afford to take a risk with a rookie. I suspect it's the latter; if they had two teams, Toprak would be a shoe in for the second operation.

2 seconds is a mile off. When Binder and Dixon tested (and raced) they were just over 1 second off the pace.

If you read the article he did struggle, he would need to adapt maybe more than others purely because of his riding style. That’s pretty much how Lin Jarvis summed it up and I suppose he’d know.

I doubt if Dixon did enough on his trials but he was within a second but was it enough to warrant the chance of a full time ride and (when he stays on) he shows promise on the Moto2 ..... unless they are looking to nick someone from the KTM junior stable in Moto2 as i dont see anyone already in MotoGP leaving their current rides to go to a floundering Yamaha set up

Martin's name keeps being linked to Yamaha as it's a factory team and he feels he should have been the one to be in the factory Ducati team.

We shouldn't forget the Dorna influence in all of this; getting Toprak into the series would do wonders for marketing the series outside of the traditional base. The trouble with that is it would impact WSB, and do they really want to play a part in removing one of the main stars of WSB, and in so doing risk damaging the resurgence of that series?

Toprak is shooting himself in the foot by saying it’s factory ride or nothing.

The win by the LCR on Sunday demonstrates the satellite bikes are pretty much on a par nowadays.

You’re not going to put a rider on a factory bike when he’s 2 seconds off the pace but one of the satellite teams might take a chance.

Well there's no non-factory Yamaha seat any more is there ? So it's not really a point now. I think that comment was early last year ?
