Suzuki extended warranty worth it?

Post by Supermofo »

So I was going to use Suzuki again for this service as the warranty on the GSXS runs to Dec. I knew I'd pay over the odds to do this but just piece of mind really as then I'll be covered to the end of this riding season for any snags and bike will be at about 6k miles.

Suzuki are now also offering to extend warranties for 12 months at a time for each Suzuki service you have up to 7 years old. Now the catch with this is you have to follow the official schedule ie based on 3 years 22k miles theoretical use rather than my bikes 2.8k miles. Costs are to be expected high considering my bikes only done 2.8k miles.

£420 - full Suzuki 3 year service inc plugs, airfilter, throttle body balance, brake strip etc. I'll then extend my warranty to May next year and the chance to do the same next year.

£350 - This seems to be based on a 7500 mile 'normal' service. Doesn't include the extra's above but misses out on the warranty. Seems a bit pointless.

£260 - Base service on my 2800 miles (2k miles since initial 600 miles service really). Oil/filters/lube/checks.

My initial plan was to go with whatever was the requirement to keep the warranty till Dec and then service it myself or via local garage going forward. Extra warranty would be nice but if it costs £4-500 quid a year to keep it that's a lot of money for stuff to go wrong (and beer). I'm hoping the GSXS engine being a detuned GSXR motor with 14 years of ironing out issues won't be an issue anyway, esp with the abuse a lot of Gixxers get. With a KTM I'd probably go for it, but I'm thinking it's a bit money for old rope with a Suzuki.

Am I being a cheap skate?

But for the price....maybe.

My 15000 mile service was over £700, not £420, over £400 of it was parts, there are a whole load of expensive gaskets that get replaced, admittedly it rides like a new bike now, but it was expensive.

Yours was a valve check wasn't it? That's done on mileage not age hence why it wasn't priced into the £420.

Yeah that's the thing the price isn't terrible IMO. But just wonder if it's worth even that with a Jap bike.

I bought 6 new GSXR1000s and thrashed the arse of them from new, on track.
Never had any real problems after the K7 ate its gearbox.

If you're handy with a set of spanners, nah
If you like modifying it and potentially voiding the warranty, nah
If you like peace of mind and don't mind paying over the odds for service work, maybe

Yes, it included the valve clearances, from memory the service intervals on mine are 7500 miles, oil and filter change, 15000 miles, valve clearances and everything else, as I do 6000 miles a year it's not a big issue for me, oil and filter change every 5000 miles and then big one every 2.5 years, it's the cost of running a big bike, I could do it myself, but I've no desire to, it's way to fiddly and highly strung for me to fuck about with, I've got older, much simpler bikes to fiddle with.

I've never paid more than £200 for any service.

I personally wouldn’t for the reason that they’d expect you to have the service done by them, I do my own work regardless of what it is and only use them when it’s for warranty reasons.

Yes, and spark plugs, air filters and the rest, an oil and filter change on a GSXR engine is a piece of piss and should take about an hour, which makes £200 pretty expensive, but the intermediate service is pretty much an oil and filter change and a check round the bike, it's the 15000 mile ones that are expensive on Suzukis, Yamahas it's the 28000 mile one.

Yes, but it started when it was registered in Dec 2020 and I didn't buy it till Jan 22. So the warranty runs till Dec of this year as is if I go for the cheapest service.

When the warranty runs out in December, just buy a new bike.

That was my thoughts, get it done by them to cover me to the end of the 3 years and if no issues by that point it hopefully means it'll be fine. I don't recall reading/hearing about issues with the GSXS it's all fairly old tech.
