Mel Gibson Accounts for his Drunken Anti-Semitic Tirade
"I went home, saw my kids were there...so I talked to them for a little bit. I thought this is it, this is the end of it, but I just have to get through this morning. It was a little rough that morning so I chased it down with a few cold ones." "You talked to your kids while you were slugging down more to get through it?" "Oh yeah".
Respect to him for opening up like that about his issues with alcohol. I empathise, he'd risk it all to get wasted once. And does it again and again. He has not convinced me however, that he is not a robust Jew hater. I think he knows he has to keep a lid on that but the booze lets it out.

That's booze for you. And being an old entitled cnut.
I think it's a shame, he's ruining his legacy, same as Jim Davidson, same as loads of others who can't help themselves keeping their nasty little opinions under wraps, when they could have just shouted at the TV.

He funded the build of & attends his own church just down the road from the RockStore. He's not too smart, bit of a thicko. If he hadn't made it in acting, he'd just be some council estate chav probably stealing cars.

But he did. Clearly he like to be nice too.
Even in 2004 he donated $10m to charity.

Tbh with your attitude I don't think you'd have done the same
Who's the thicko?
I mean his 'rant' was nearly 20 years ago and he's given millions upon millions to Jewish charity since then.

I look forward to becoming a 'thicko' if it means I'll have a few $million to donate to charity.
He's a bit of a puzzle. Can act when he has to. Can direct films like Apocalypto. Can be Max Rockatansky and Rocky Rhodes. Can be in stuff like The Year of Living Dangerously and Lethal Weapon
Whatever. Hollywood forgave him because he makes money.

There isn't exactly a world-wide shortage of rich thickos, or piss poor genius's either for that matter... & then we have compartmentalized intelligence where people are highly intelligent in one area, but leave you wondering who ties their laces for them when they speak out in a different area. Ben Carson is one of them, highly skilled neurosurgeon... Ran for POTUS, thinks the Egyptian pyramids were grain silos.Count Steer wrote: ↑Sat Mar 18, 2023 5:29 pm I look forward to becoming a 'thicko' if it means I'll have a few $million to donate to charity.

He's not wrong though, the entire Roman Catholic faith is based on guilt.

Or hope.
Or probably many other things.
But tell me , why is it all based on guilt?

Emotional blackmail, the whole confession malarkey, sit in a wee box and admit you've been bad so a bloke in a black shirt can make you recite some bad poetry and make it all right again.
I mean, it's all a huge con trick, like that boy up my way who started his own church that promised everlasting life if you have him a third of your wages, then diverted millions of government money from his bus manufacturing company as "charitable donations" until it went bust and Boris' mate got it for a song.
Or those yank preachers who say you'll burn in hell unless you send them money that they spend on hookers and Cadillacs. They're all the same except the Tims have been at it longer and have a global reach.

Re: Mel Gibson Accounts for his Drunken Anti-Semitic Tirade
A friend was raised as a Catholic, even after her mother had to flee Ireland to Liverpool having become pregnant 'out of wedlock'.* I suggested that having a framework that provides all the answers and promises life everlasting was easier than not having those things. She burst out laughing and explained what it was like to be ruled and controlled by guilt.
* The story has a happy but sad ending.

Re: Mel Gibson Accounts for his Drunken Anti-Semitic Tirade
All religion is based on guilt to some degree,it's how they keep their members and their club going.
I'm not going too deep or prolonged on this one, because there are folk on here I've a lot of time for,who are persons of faith and I have no wish to be seen to attack them, but the question deserves an answer,at least from my perspective.
Anyone who has ever been raised in a strict religious setting will commonly experience that feeling of guilt in varying degrees. The rules are black and white,a list of 'thou shalt nots'. When a person's moral decision making encounters something which is not either Black (bad) or white (good),but rather a grey mix, then a decision can result in a feeling of guilt. Have I done the right thing? Is it contrary to the churches teaching?
My family are very religious and I was brought up strictly. I loved my parents dearly, but I did not espouse their beliefs,so given my upbringing,it's difficult not to be affected by disapproval for one's actions. The things you are repeatedly told as a child leave a big impression. This does not impact on my decision making process on a daily basis, but even as a non religious person,I am aware of it.
Consider the example. You are a believer in what the bible tells you,in a completely literal sense. You bring up your family to believe your church's way gets you into Heaven and those not adhering to this belief will go to Hell when they die and be tortured day and night forever. One day your eldest lad confides in you, that he is gay. He does this because you are close and he thinks you will understand. Based on your belief,if your son cannot be 'cured',then he is now damned to be tortured day and night for eternity. Will you choose to go against your church's teachings,or will you throw your son on the street and disown him?
That's only one example of the guilt which will come from that conflict. Grey areas have no place in dogma.

Re: Mel Gibson Accounts for his Drunken Anti-Semitic Tirade
Gibson has tied his antisemitism to his upbringing & blamed his dad several times. His dad is a raging jew hater. Part of the reason Gibson built his own church is that the mainstream catholic church wanted nothing to do with him... & he didn't think they were extreme enough.Skub wrote: ↑Sat Mar 18, 2023 9:33 pm My family are very religious and I was brought up strictly. Luckily it's only celebrities who make complete tits of themselves when drunk unlike us normal people. Otherwise how would we be able to sit here and be so sanctimonious, eh?

Re: Mel Gibson Accounts for his Drunken Anti-Semitic Tirade
I may have been drunk and made a tit of myself occasionally, I have never had someone come up to me afterwards and tell me I went off on a racist rant.
