engine oil
engine oil
Just bought some supermarket own brand fully synth (MA/MA2 API SL) for €6.99/2l.
Anyone think this a bad idea or if it is rated as stated, then its the same spec as yamalube rs4 at £18/l.
I bought 6 litres as i drop the oil every 1500 miles anyway.

Re: engine oil
My pal who spannered for Padgett's and other BSB teams said regular oil changes are the best way. Cheap oil regularly is better than posh oil at long gaps.

Re: engine oil
The Supermarket own brand stuff will be made by one of the big manufacturers anyway, just with a different additive package.

Re: engine oil
Oil change every 1500 miles with decent modern oil in a CP3- seriously?
Whatever makes you happy I guess, but that's madness IMO, I can't see any possible benefit from it
Re: engine oil
A) i'm bloody hard on my engines
B) it only takes 2 and a bit litres
C) you've seen me ride!
D) on race engines, we used to change at 500 max!

Re: engine oil
With my Le Mans I change it every 1000 miles with filter every 2000 (I have an Excel maintenance spread sheet with MPG, Parts/cost, and Maintenance tasks). It currently changing the oil itself, the bike ejects it, I put fresh oil in I've just drained all the oil out to repace the alloy crush washer and put a bit of PTFE tape around the thread. The oil is only 700 miles old so its going back in.
I use either Halfords or Comma Classic 20W/50 at around £20 for 5ltrs.
This year I will also change the oil and and do a valve check my Tuono. From new I've always taken it to Southern Cross in NW London but now i thinks its time I did it myself and save a bit of money. This will get done when the service light comes on which is around 4500 miles.

Re: engine oil
Service intervals on mine are 6k miles/1 year. I'd never do 6k on the oil as the Duke only holds 1.8 litres so I do it annually at 2.5-3k miles. Recommended oil is £18 a litre Over that 3k miles it'll need 500-800mls top up.

Re: engine oil
Do supermarkets sell own brand motorcycle oil?
Don't put car oil in a motorcycle, it's not good for the clutch of the oil.
Clean cheap oil is better than dirty expensive oil.

My Hornet's on 90k, it's done god knows how many U-turn and Fig 8 demos on training courses, I always use car oil... and the clutch is fine.
The previous GS500E hit 140k, I put a s/h clutch in at about 110k. That got used for despatching then several years CBT / DAS training... all on car oil.

Re: engine oil
Depends on the car oil.
If it's Dino or semi, it might be ok.
Fully Synth and you're gonna get more friction inhibitors.

I always use correct spec bike oil. Change every 12 months and always under mileage. No top ups in the yamaha.
