Re: In todays news...
Not that I know much about this but I think SVB is a little unusual in that it held a high amount of deposits against few loans (a lot of cash (venture capital supplied) rich start up companies). They had to do something with the cash so they sank it in to bonds. The rapid interest rate rises made the bonds they were long term locked in to less viable. They were still liquid long term but the rush of withdrawals caused them to sell the bonds off at a loss leaving a hole. Not sure if other banks are as exposed but the fast interest rate rise won't be helping.

Except of course it is not that unusual. The Biden admin refuse to accept they have caused a recession, they even had it renamed but they can’t (or won’t) stop the effect of this very real recession.
Don’t know what the effect will be over here in UK banks but then I don’t have enough money to worry about it.

Re: In todays news...
I think mainstream banks have more diverse portfolios than SVB so I don’t think there’s any great worry at the moment. I suspect it’s concentrated a few minds though and it’s hard to believe that the Fed (and the BoE) didn’t see this as a real risk of rapid interest rates rises after such a long time of ultra low rates.Screwdriver wrote: ↑Sun Mar 12, 2023 11:40 am Except of course it is not that unusual. I think it tells us everything we needed to know about the immigration row more than the bbc row. The Tory’s are nasty bastards without compassion and just trying to drum up support from nasty bastards to save their skin.

Re: In todays news...
It's the ultra-low rates over an extended period of time (over 12 years) that are the distortion. And half a percent every couple of months is hardly a rapid rate rise for those with memories longer than 15 years.
