Amazing... the bke's stopped on a dual carriageway surrounded by green fields, yet the bike behind is apparently in a tunnel... must be a wormhole camera It's got there by travelling zero miles on the trip!!

Thought I'd best copy my reply to the original thread for the benefit of the archives.

The mirror works pretty good. As things move out of your wing mirror view they move into the view of this one. So its a really good blind spot mirror and much better than those little ones you stick on your wing mirror.

The rider does obviously obscure what is directly behind them as it is quite high on my screen due to the dash layout. If you could fit the mirror lower you'd be able to see under your arms and behind you too!

Overall I'd say its a success as I would see anyone like a cyclist, or motorbike, trying to push past and I'm glad I got it. However, if I wasn't commuting in Londons traffic and just riding on open roads, i'd probably not bother with one.

Honda's little leccy car has cameras instead of mirrors. The Aston Martin Valkyrie does too. In both cases I'm guessing it's for aerodynamic reasons.

Someone, at one point in history, 'invented' 'prism' mirrors for cars.

They were embedded into the root of the A-pillar, and only stuck out about an inch, no more from the side of the car, and the view behind was visible on the interior of the car on the other surface of the prism. It was in about the same place as the 'rear-view' image screens on that photo.

Very clever idea, good for aerodynamics, the rear-view image was not as far from 'straight-ahead' as an external mirror. I only remember seeing them on TV (probably Tomorrow's World), but never seen anything like them in production, and can't even find anything about them online. It's like the idea was hidden away.

I suspect a prism is too narrow to give a decent field of view unless it's a) fucking massive or b) you're sitting in just the right place? Making a prism which is big enough to give a decent viewing angle would then mean it's as big as a mirror, at which point - why bother with the much more expensive solution?

Camera gets around that by decoupling the size of the thing you look at vs. the size of the thing sticking out of the car. I also bet cameras are now posible jsut 'cause mobile phones etc. have made them massively cheaper and more reliable.

IIRC the 'large area' bit of the prism was the 'back-wall' of the thing, which was half in, half-out of the car, and it gave just as big a field of view as a regular mirror (through fancy non-flat surfaces I guess)

Perhaps it was Raymond Baxter back in the day lol, but I have it in my head that I saw it on a car. When I worked in the motor trade a guy I worked for would often buy in odd lots as a focal point for the showroom, be it a big old Citroen, rolls Royce 20/25 etc. I'm wondering if it was some obscure thing we had in? Cant find anything on google though...

No, we would only have had production cars. I'm starting to think I'm imagining it now! Just spent way too long on a fruitless searching on google.
