Last minute advice on wedding videography (esp. OBS Studio)

Post by Kneerly Down »

With the tight restrictions on numbers I'm setting up the video for no.1 son's wedding this weekend...so no pressure!

The church where the wedding is taking place has no wifi and is in a tricky mobile spot also, so no O2 or Vodafone and very limited Three and EE.
Just about getting 4G with 2-3Mbps upload on the phones at one of the windows.
I bought a 4G standalone router and that, when it gets signal, gets 200-300kbps (so is going back).
Was hoping to use my Draytek 2860 with an external 4G dongle but none of them get signal :(

So, have a 2860ln arriving today/tomorrow with external 4G antennas that should at least match the phones and allow wifi access (well, egress more IYSWIM) for the whole hall.

I'm going to tell everyone to put their phones on flight mode to try to limit signal issues as much as possible.

Setup is main Canon EOS camera with shotgun mic to get the marriage vows and Galaxy with external mic and Droidcam Pro to capture the singer (behind her perspex screen)
Canon camera is connected to Surface Pro with Canon Webcam Utility. Galaxy with Droidcam client.
Both are fed into OBS to both record and stream to the wedding YouTube live channel.
I'm using a wireless 'presenter pencil' with up/down keys mapped to change scenes in OBS discretely.
I'd normally choose to have backup mic but I can't monitor it while the service is ongoing so will just have to rely on primary one.
I will be recording the service with devices not networked/streamed in case the streaming kit goes wrong.

Anyway, enough background, hopefully.
Has anyone used OBS, DroidCam, Canon Webcam Utility much and can offer any tips/advice including how stable they are/aren't?
Not sure if I can record on the Canon EOS while Canon Webcam utility is being used?
Also, not sure if having, say a 1080p recording with 720p stream will add to the computer overhead much?

Trying not to get too stressed about this, but hate having to do this with the pretty severe restrictions due to Covid.
Still, compared to the reception venue, marquee and honeymoon all being cancelled, so long as I get it recorded on something half-decent it'll possibly be regarded as a success...

I understood about 10% of that.

Can't you just use a video camera like the old days?

Due to attendance restrictions (and that's just changed), he wants to live stream a multi camera outside broadcast live on YouTube.

That, although it hasn't changed in Scotland just yet, although our Nicola does seem to take the 'anything you can do' approach when it comes to Covid restrictions.
We are allowed 20 in the wedding service at the church (is going from 30 to 15 in England from Monday)
Then we are allowed 15 at the reception at the approved wedding venue, which late last week said they couldn't do it, so the wedding venue is now looking like being a marquee on our lawn (for which I hurriedly fixed the lawnmower yesterday and gave it a quick mow as the torrent of rain just started, hosted by the chocolate business :)

Other 'venues' are limited to 6 people from max 2 households, who are each receiving a wedding hamper (not solely, but including chocolate :) :) :) ) and hopefully will get the speeches and the service itself over live-stream.

Think I'm going to ditch Canon USB webcam utility...ok for an informal Zoom but doesn't seem to always play nice. Hope my HDMI video capture dongle is working!

Good luck with that, I've just had monstyrettes wedding a month ago, she didn't want it livestreamed which is just as well as there was no signal coverage where we were on Arran and wifi only within the cottage we had rented, so we just concentrated on taking photos( mostly me on an slr) and used video(mostly my 15yr old on his newer slr) with a compact on a tripod as a back up video. You could arrange a short live stream and upload excerpts and stills which would make your day a bit simpler.
Because the numbers were restricted everyone had a few things to do and the upshot of that was we were all knackered by evening and a bit too tired to be partying properly, we did have a great day though.
It so helped we had a fabulous backdrop to everything.

My advice is get some basic stuff but dont forget to enjoy it while it happens.
